Grips for 1006 & 1066

There hasn't been any activity on this thread for several months, so here's a new thought to chew on:

What kinds of grips are favored by those who shoot 1006's, 1066's, etc.?

Having had my 1006 & 1066 for six or eight months now, the one thing I have firmly decided is that I do not like the factory, straight-back grips.

But before I replace them I need to decide what to replace them with -- arched back, palmswell, Hogue, etc. I may start a poll later, but first I would like to learn all of the possibilities.

So, who likes what kinds of grips for their 10's???

Thanks!

I'll let you know soon!

Hi cmr,

I have three sets of grips coming tomorrow for my 1006.

OEM S&W curved back grips.

Hogue rubber grips (model 06010).

Hogue checkered rosewood.

I plan on playing with them over the next week, and then reporting my findings.

Look for my thread soon! :)

Thomas,

I'll do that. Thanks!

I have tried all of the grips mentioned...
I can shoot with any of them but the Houge Rubber seem to absorb the most recoil the best and less slipery with sweaty hands, here in LoUiSiAna we are hot and sticky anyways. :(

The Houge wood is very pretty and dress the pistol up nice!
The palm swells add to the feel like the Houge Rubber grips, The curve back should have come standard with the pistol IMO.
I still like the straight backs and do shoot with them at times they are the thinest of all the grips and will lay closer in to the body. I used to carry with them the most.

I totally agree. I find that I prefer the Hogue's on any semi-auto that I carry concealed. The factory Delrin grips are just too slippery in inclement weather. Living in the Seattle area, I figure the odds are that it will be raining, drizzling, misting, intermittent showers, or some other term that means "wet" if I ever had to shoot when outdoors. The Hogue's are a little rounder and are more "tacky", allowing (for me) a more secure grip.

If you live where the weather can make your hands slippery either through temp and humidity or through good old fashioned rain, you should practice in the inclement weather so you know what to expect. Sure, you probably have a dry gun to start with when bringing it out of concealment. That may not last. Unless you're in San Diego, it isn't always 72 and sunny.

I bet I will agree...

And I bet I will agree with Shadow and BaldE,

I'm sure the rubber Hogue grips with be the "gripiest" and absorb the most recoil, and the checkered rosewood will look the best.

I'll see how well I can shoot with the rosewood, I would like to leave those on the gun, just for beauty's sake, but if they are too slippery, I'm leave the rubber Hogue grips on.

Wouldn't want to merely wound the poor whitetail! :D

Bought mine NIB `94 or `95.Last one they got.Put Trijicon N/S on that year...they`re still bright. Added Hogues also and a Bar Sto barrel too. A great gun

Bought mine in 93 with adjustable sights. Hogue bricked kingwood grips and wolf 22lb spring. I love this weapon.:)

Original pics of my 10xx series pistols was small, so I re-worked my pictures on the first page post #7...
All have their original grips on them except the 1086 which is wearing a set of Houge Rubber.

10mm Pistols

1066 with factory night sights. Its a great shooter.

Question Grips for 1006 & 1066

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to order the Hogue grips for now. The 3rd gen's that I like best all have the Hogue grips. If ThomasH & I ever get any of the arched/curved back grips I'll make a comparison.

Cheers!

My first but certainly not my last S&W Pistol.....my 1066. I am blown away by this gun.

I have a 1006, 1066, 1026. I am shopping around for the right deal on a 1076 right now too.

I had front serrations added to my 1006, and played with the trigger a bit. I got what must have been the last all steel guide rod from S&W to replace the cracked OEM aluminum one. If anyone knows where I can get more solid SS rods please pass it on to me.

I had a set of Hogue rosewood grips on my 1006, but they kept shooting loose so I got rid of them. Had to sand the seam when I originally put them on, it was badly mismatched.

SS guide rods

I to would like find a new guide rod. Seems like I've looked everywhere so far no luck.:(

You can still get guide rods from S&W, they are just the crappy aluminum ones with the crimped on steel end.
