1076 -Did I make a mistake? It's not a 1006!

Hmm thought it was just me that liked the 10 mm, I have been a fireman for 20yrs. On that note I got the FBI 1076 from the FBI I think. My brother was the Firearms instructer for the FBI in the 90s at Quantico. He was a tester for the 1076 when it came out. He liked it alot but like the 45 even better. He was able to use a S&W 45 for some years until they made him only use issued guns.He was sent a letter stating he could buy his 1076 if he wanted it. He gave the letter to my dad and said he could have it. I gave my dad the money for the gun and have loved it ever since. Anyone know what they are worth? This is an FBI gun and was one of the test guns used before they where issued. Not for sale I just have never seen another one at gun shops or shows.

Please set aside some funds to get the factory letter for the 1076 this will tell you if it is the "FBI Issue", the price is anywhere from $1000 and north depending on the condition, box, paperwork, tools, some as high as $2200+

I'm retired Fire Dept 30 1/2 years service professionally...Stay safe! :)

thanks for all the info, I am looking for the letter my brother got to see if the serial # is on it. That should confirm it if I ever decide to sell it.

Must be location, I see 1006s a lot more than 1076/66s. Now having said that, when I was looking to get a 1006 it took over a year for one to show up at my LGS. The 1076 is a great shooter and a lot easier to carry if you are going that route (I also have a 66), but the 1006 is my favorite. All that barrel and weight tames full power loads easily.

The 1006 is a nice looking gun but it is just configured with ambi safety, 5 inch barrel and adjustable sites.

Just an additional note, 1006s were available with fixed or adjustable sights

You can find them cheaper than that, I have 800 bucks into mine with nightsights, trigger and action jobs done by Novaks. there are some deals out there still.

Feel free to impart the knowledge of just where that might be....as someone who's been looking for awhile now and seeing all of them at $750....I'd like to know WHERE you can find them, barring some cousin's senile father giving one away.

You don't need to fiddle around with the hammer on the 1076, you squeeze the trigger and it goes bang, the hammer remains cocked till you fire again and again or you de-cock it!

That's kind of what I think. ;) Anyway, you wanted the 1006 for some reason, so just be patient - one will come along. Then, you will have both! :)

I have had both and while I can't say anything bad about the 1006, I prefer the 1066/1076. They are all very good 10mms and I don't think you will regret having the 1076. Hang on to it.

BTW, the proper way to get your 1076 to cocked position is to rack the slide. If you want to fire it single-action on the first shot, just don't decock after loading. As Shadow1006 says, don't "fiddle around with the hammer!"

pulling it out of the holster with the finger NOT ON THE TRIGGER, I have found that it is very easy to cock while during the process of drawing the firearm. I love the single action trigger as compared to the long hard pull of double action.

side note, a 1086 came up on gunsamerica this am for 650 dollars almost bought it but then I realized that it is double action only, I believe. No safeties anywhere on the gun and no de-cocking lever would have to mean it is DAO? right? any way it sold in 2 hours, knew it would.

I have checked my 1076 after I noticed others have stated their gun had marking on them stating it will fire without the mag in it. Mine has nothing on it but the normal S&W marks, but it does fire with the mag out.( at least it dry fires). and the serial # starts with THB, I know for a fact my brother was a tester. I thinking for sure this is a test gun before they where issued. I am sending off the $50 and letter today to S&W for a letter on this gun.

gun shows, but yeah they have taken a bump since before when I was looking for one so 750-800 might be the going rate for a normal model of the 1076.

The 1076 have a special trigger group, so the S&W book says, so I assume they are like para ordnance decent double action trigger.
The FBI guns came with 11 or 15 round mags.

I bought a 1076, 1006, 1066 and recently a 1026 on GB. The most I paid was 750 for the 1026. The others were in the 650 dollar range and all were in pretty good shape. They are out there. Just keep looking at the auction sites. You'll find one.

Flip, I might be stating the obvious but why not just go to the classifieds & post a "want to trade" ad to see if you can get your desired 1006?

Good idea about using the classifieds.

I only thought about it but have not acted on it yet. I'm looking at a 1006 now and have to pick up a 3913 on Tuesday for $500.
I like decockers. Never felt safe letting the hammer down softly because I like my thumb.

Just for the record, I was a volunteer Firefighter in Prudhoe Bay for 6 years; interior/exterior and engineered a 100' ladder pumper which carried 2500 gal of water and 1500 gal of AFFF. Got my Firefighter 1 and was also on the HazMat team. Been to some big fires; the largest was a drilling rig fire or maybe a 20,000 bbl methanol fire.

I'll never forget my pager going off at 2AM in the morning and the announcement " we have an explosion and possible fire at the Central Compressor Plant"; the world's largest gas processing facility. Egads, it's -40 F and the wind is howling at about 50 MPH and I got to go to a possible fire at a plant which processes about a billion SCFD of methane?

So I think I rate the Firefighter emblem although I did not want to join up now on my present job because I'll be 68 next week.

Here are the production numbers, 1006 and 1076 are most common but I agree that not many are being sold now days.

that is cool, Me being a fan of the decockers as well. Love sigs so that makes sense. Will try to pick up a 1026 in the future when comes on for a reasonable price. I have seen a 1086 just two days ago sell for 650 which I guess is a good price but I am not interested in collecting all the models in the series. The 1076, FBI spec firearm was the best in the 10XX series as far as a carry weapon is concerned.
