I emailed S&W, they stated I can send it in and they would evaluate it and get to me. Along with the statement that average turnaround time is 4 to 6 weeks.

Be aware the common practice if they can not bring back to factory specs is to retain (destroy?) the pistol citing liability issues and offer an equivalent NEW equivalent current model.

If I get another 10mm or 45 ACP, this not a polymer frame, I possibly can live with that.

Or, are you saying that I should just forget about that option of sending it back?

He is saying you are taking a great risk by sending that classic to a group of people that will BARELY recognize what it is, almost surely do not have the proper parts to return it to original, and if they decide it is not safe as it sits, they could possibly not want to return it.

At that point, they would offer you one of the half-junk products they offer currently… and they have nothing in their lineup that is similar to any 3rd Gen and their QC is so bad now that I would be leery of nearly anything they produce.

I sent a private message to BMCM, and did not get a reply. I’d be content with a more proper hammer and safety, and leave it otherwise as is.

Sevens is saying exactly what I meant - if you send it back it may be lost forever and a lesser current substitute offered in exchange. If it were me I would contact BMCM rather than trusting that you would get pistol back from SW.

I say this without judgement of the quality of SW repair shop. They treated me well 4 or 5 years ago - but I can understand their concern about liability for the use of a significantly modified gun leaving their shop and I doubt they have vintage parts necessary to put it back to original condition. There are some odd xx26, xx76 safety parts out there and BMCM is probably in possession of some or knows what is available and where.

I guess I’ll have to practice my patience and wait for BMCM to get back with me. I could live with it if we couldn’t replace The deco key lever, and if it was made like a 1066. I am concerned about the slide mounted on on it now. And I’d love to get the hammer changed.

I was wondering about the decocker…. I messed up a year ago at a gun show. I guy had a 1076 like new, with 5 mags for seven Franklins. I walked off pondering if I should buy it. I returned to the table within five minutes, and it was gone😢.
So I’ve seen this one at the last two gun shows, so I decided to jump on it…

Those 5 mags alone were worth the asking price...🤦

Assuming he’s got the parts, BMCM could probably do a complete Resto with re-finishing. You’d have a fully-functional, Like-New 1076. That would be more valuable down the road, in my opinion, than a hybrid 1076/66.

On the 4506, I really wanted a 4506-1, but this one will do.
That pretty interesting. I have owned a 1006 and a 4506-01 for thirty years and only shot one or two magazines through them both. I'd say the 1006 is my favorite and bought all the reloading tools necessary to do a lot of reloading but never got around to shooting it much. I guess I realized it was just too much gun to do a lot of plinking with it. I did enjoy the research into making pretty hot loads for it. I was not aware of the different models that had different features on them. I remember reading about the FBI doing a torture test on the 10mm pistols shooting thousands of rounds without a failure and was very impressed. Too bad for the FBI that their agents most with accounting degrees ( and a lot of women I guess) couldnt handle the recoil. Yes it is a serious pistol but not the best for concealed carry :-) I wonder if the current generation of Smith 10mm pistols could hold up as well in a similar torture test.... How could it ?
