Trigger question. I have 2 smith 10mm's. A 1066 and a 1076. I just aquired the 1076. And the SA pull on the 1076 is gritty, it breaks clean, but you can feel after reset, that there is some grit, like parts not moving correctly or not lubbed. Gun functions great, puts bullets where you want them to go.

Is there a problem with the trigger on my 1076? Because my 1066 does not exhibit ANY of this. The SA on the 1066 is butter smooth, no gritty feel to it.

The trigger spring is put on wrong, the gun needs cleaning or you need a lighter hammer spring.

Thank you for your response. Is this something I can do myself, the trigger spring? Is there a manual to go by to take the 1076 down?

I appreciate any help

Unless you really understand what you are doing with a trigger, you are way better off to send it S&W for repair or know a gunsmith that works on S&W pistols.

Trigger play spring. That is the problem. I compared the 1076 frame with my 1066. The trigger play spring on the 1076, the top half is torn off.

Will be sending it to SW for repair. When they say the 1076 is built like a tank. They mean it. Even with this part broken. The firearm functioned properly.

Thanks for the help.

Wildcard, before you send your 1076 inspect your trigger play spring. These were very prone to breaking; But, the replacement spring S&W supplied has no top bar. I have 17 1076s that have springs with no top bar. Only one has the top bar. Look for evidence that top of spring actually broke off, or one of the "ears" is broken. I'm old, I have to use a magnifying glass. If you want to send me a photo of the spring you're welcome to. D

Thanks for the help and info. I can tell the trigger play spring was broke off. You can see a slight edge from the right side where it used to be. I know it's no big deal since the gun will function without it.

Will try to get a pic up.

Exactly. The FBI first documented in 1990 that their 1076s would continue to fire with a broken trigger spring. A routine occurrence. However, the FBI's concern was that the piece of metal that breaks off the trigger play spring would become lodged in the trigger group and lock up the pistol. That was admittedly a remote possibility but one voiced by the FBI nonetheless.

So I really don't need it fixed? The gun will operate fine without it.
