Should I try out some 124 grain bullets for plinking? I just ran out of 115 grain bullets and about to purchase some more.

Pro's/Con's?

BTW

M&P 9c
Winchester 231
Winchester SPP

Taking recommendations for next batch!

Thanks all

That's all I use. I like the 124 for the combination of bullet weight and speed (a compromise, of course). I believe the 124 grain bullet was the original bullet weight for the caliber, too.

I seem to see more problems reported from 115gr 9mm ammo than anything else. I see issues with reliability, accuracy, and complaints of more felt recoil. It's pretty rare to see those same issues with 124gr 9mm loads. I've never really messed with the 147gr stuff. I know I load lead 124gr bullets and my loads cycle all my guns just fine. Back when I used to buy bulk 115gr 9mm I used to have problems from time to time but that may have just been because it was bottom shelf WWB, UMC, or whatever was cheapest. But it was always the cheapest that had the 115gr bullets.

Yea I have had no problems yet with 115 grain except for accuracy, with reloads and factory ammo.

Granted that cold just be me and it probably is, but figured why not try 124 out for size, who knows it might be very good with my gun!

What brand would you recommend with Winchester 231 powder? I see different diameters like .355 or .356? Does it matter?

Should I keep with the Berry's brand or use something else?

Was looking at these.

If you want lead bullets, try Missouri Bullet Co. If you like the Berrys, stick with them, but check the prices at T J Convera.

Gotcha yea I like the Berry's

But did not know if TMJ or FMJ bullets would perform better.

You can push a jacketed bullet a lot faster than you can a plated bullet.

Lead - .356
Jacketed - .355

I bought 125 grn LRNs from Meisters and have been happy with them. I haven't had a real issue with any maker. Some offer better shipping rates than others, others are a bit cheaper for the bullets, some quicker/slower. It pays to shop around for the best overall deal. The products, in my opinion, are about equal.

If you can get HP-38 powder, it's the same as 231 and usually a buck or two cheaper.

My problem with plated bullets is that they are short compared to an equal weight jacketed bullet.

I like to carry 124/125gr bullets for SD in the 9mm so I also practice with the same weight bullets and try to replicate the carry load.

I'm a fan of using a bullet weight that is "best" for that caliber, usually the bullet weight used to develop the round. I'm not a fan of light or lighter for caliber bullets.(remember, only my opinion so don't hate on me)

In the 9mm I like 124/125gr bullets.
In the 38/357 I like 158gr bullets.
In the 45 Auto I like 230gr bullets.
In the 45 Colt I like 250/255gr bullets.
Well, I think you get what I mean... (just my opinion, not law)

In 9mm I lean towards the 124gr FMJs for plinking with W231. This combo seems to cycle the action very well for me.

Have a G23 that I have been waiting on a 9mm conversion barrel I ordered for it a few months ago. Suspect if that actually ever arrives, my 9mm consumption will increase by a bit more.

I have the exact gun OP. I don't load 115's, but I do load 124's and 147's.
The 147's are more accurate in my M&P than the 124's with several different shooters. My CZ75 likes the 124's. Just something else to think about.
