How many jams are considered to be too many? I realize this is not objective and most shooters/owners opinions will vary. i have an early M&P 15/22 that jams using the preferred Remington ammo 1 to 2 rounds every magazine. I can't get thru a complete mag w/o a jam. Mags are first generation.

Question is: Should I return the rifle to S&W for repair?

Okay. Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll switch ammo and give the rifle a second chance.

About 3000 rounds through and only one jam. I have used the federal bulk from wally mart and no problem. got the one jam using the winchester bulk. Still one jam out of 333 rounds is still good.

My S&W 22A will eat everything, had 3 fail to anything in over 2000 rounds. Each of them was due to an ammo problem (bent/dented casing on Fed bulk on one, failed primer on two Winchester rounds.

I only hope my new 15-22 will do the same when I receive it next week. Darn 10 day waiting period:(

Shot 300 rds or so of Federal bulk pack purchased at WalMart. 550 rounds per box. Still getting 1 or 2 jams per magazine. Magazines are loaded carefully.

Recommendations?

Sounds like what I was going thru with mine. Try CCI minimags. If they give you problems, send it in to Smith. I did. I now have a gun that is almost jam proof. It even shoots the dreaded Remington Golden Bullet!:D

so far I have run every type of ammo through mine without issue. I do have lots and lots of Remington Yellow Jackets and Vipers. They feed without issue. I think in almost 3,000 rounds I have had 3 that did not fire.

I have run some of the worst every made ammo without a problem. It is African made PMC. It has a funny smell, under and over and just crappy QC. It is the old orange box stuff. They say the newer stuff is good to go.

I also run a lot of CCI Mini Mags. Both hollow points and round nose. They feed very well.

Second range trip I reloaded so much I had a blister the size of Texas on my thumb. It was such a happy pain.

Buzz.

Still getting 1 or 2 jams per magazine.
If you told us what's happening we might be able to help.

"Jam" goes on toast in the morning, it does not describe what your stoppage or failure may be (or what flavor you prefer). ;)

No further help necessary. Have called S&W and they are sending me a shipping label. BTW, jam = FTE and stovepipes.

My thanks to everyone,

FTE? Whatzat? :) Failure to extract? Failure to eject? A real stovepipe (empty case sticking out of the ejection port)?

No matter, S&W will fix it, but you see our dilemma with vague descriptions.

I have ran about 500 rounds of both Remington and Federal bulk ammo through mine with no problems whatsoever. Don't know what to say about the jams. Just adding my two cents.

FTE = failure to extract and failure to eject. Stovepipe = where the empty cartridge sticks out the ejection port with the bolt closed. It doesn't get any more specific than this.

Wished i would have gotten an answer to my original question, but it was lost in the quest for more detail.

That's okay. As I said, I have called S&W and they are sending me a shipping label. Thanks for the responses.

Sorry to hear of your problems Riam. I have had only 1 FTF in mine and have put about 7K rounds through it in the last couple months.

I use the Federal Bulks. I would say that anything more than 1 or 2 FTE in a bulk pack is excessive based upon what I have seen. FTFs are a different story. I would blame that on the ammo, not the rifle.

Hopefully S&W will send you new mags when the rifle comes back. Good luck!

Well, it's been two weeks now since I mailed my 15/22 back to S&W. What's the usual turnaround time? I'm looking forward to getting my little guy back all tuned up and ready to roll.:)

I am happy to report I received my 15/22 back from S&W last week. Almost 3 wks door-to-door. Finally got a chance to test it out yesterday with the new blue recoil and hammer spring, plus whatever else S&W changed. Fired 175 rds of WalMart Federal 550 pack, JHP. Not a single "jam." Not one. Plus I fired 25 rds of lead match .22...don't recall the brand right now. The little rifle ate up this ammo too. S&W replaced two of the original style 25 rd mags with the new style. All my mags (2 new - 2 old) worked perfectly. I think I now have a keeper.

Oh, and the Colt 6920 and match HBAR we brought along worked perfectly too:)

I do not think you will find many fans of Remington Rimfire Ammo,Try Some Federal (Mine Likes the $1.47 510B from Wal-Mart) Or CCI Mini Mags. Mine runs great with the 510B's ,I had jamming issues at one time I think I bent the ejector slightly while cleaning the gun,I followed the Ejector tweak video on YouTube and it has been trouble free since.

Other that possibly the match .22, I haven't used Remmington. The Walmart Federal in the 550 pack works for general plinking. Not sure I will step up to the CCI mini mags as they cost quite a bit more - I don't see the need.

Thanks for your comments.
