I grabbed a 15-22 today with a big problem, the previous owner hacked the fake buffer tube off in hopes of adding a folding stock which he never did (pictures attached to show the damage). The good news is, I got a good deal on it, but now I need to add a new stock and cover the slot he cut in the side. Does anyone have any ideas for where to start? I found a bunch of old threads with a bunch of info on stock modification, but wondering if I’m missing any quick, easy, not-too-expensive fixes.

Besides buying a new lower from Smith and Wesson, getting a buffer tube and 2part epoxy ing it in there and slap on a normal carbine stock maybe?

If you're that far into a conversion though why not go through with it?

He cut that too far into the lower, had he cut it off further back you could have threaded it internally and just put a regular buffer tube on it.
Plus it’s quite the hack job at that.
At this point I’d do what Kayback suggested.

Idiots, guns, and Dremel tools.
They can make a gunsmith rich, but drive him crazy.

This!

ABS Plastic?

There are products available for the repair of ABS bumpers at auto parts stores.

It could be repaired by first epoxying a the tube to the receiver as a backing so the second step would be to fill in the missing portion that was removed.

It is repairable as long as it isn't necessary for structural integrity!

What type of stock are you wanting to add? Still want a folder or a AR stock?

It should be fairly easy to fix. I would chop it flush then add an aluminum tube mount, folding or static.

That static mount looks perfect! Where are you finding that? Not sure if I’m just searching the wrong thing, but I’m not able to find anything like that anywhere.

I have an extra buffer tube and stock, so if I get a mount like that, all I’ll need is a castle nut correct?

Also, I saw your SBR 15-22 with the folding stock on another thread, looks so damn cool! What is the stock you used there?

There is no need for a castle nut because of a set screw at the bottom of the mount secures in the groove in the bottom of the stock tube. There is a need for 2 taper head screws and bolts. The screw head should be flush with the inside of the receiver. Nuts should be on the out side of the receiver, in the adapter.

The folding stock adapter has a threaded mount so the nuts are not needed.

The mount is an "ACE AR Stock Adapter" with or without boss. The one pictured has a boss to help secure the mount.

I used a VZ-58 folding stock. If I did it today, I would use a Lage Mfg rifle stock or an AGP folding stock adapter. They're lighter.

Thanks for all the info. Just ordered the static mount to start. I'll let you know how it goes!
