The gun was clean. Shot 60 or so rounds yesterday. The cylinder became difficult to open. I thought the gun just needed cleaned. After cleaning the problem persists.

Release lever is pushed, the cylinder is stuck closed.

Any thoughts?

Ejector rod possible loose?

Remember that it has reverse threads so turn
counterclockwise to tighten it. A small drop of Blue Loctite on the ejector rod threads will prevent it from loosening again.

I don't know if it is loose. The cylinder will not release. it is stuck closed.

by holding the tip of the ejector rod, and cocking and releasing the hammer, the cylinder and the rod rotated. The cylinder could then be released.

So, what do I do to preclude this from happening again? I have not closed the cylinder. The tip of the rod seems secure, it will not unscrew.

What I have done for many years is insert dummy rounds in each of the cylinders and place the ejector rod in a smooth jaw vice on a 45 degree angle down to retain the dummy rounds from falling out of the chambers and not on the nubbin. If you do not know which way to loosen the rod, grab the cylinder and slightly turn it right and then left as if to rock it back and forth and it will break loose. Reverse the process reinstalling the rod but tighten it in reverse with the dummy rounds in the chambers as that prevents damage to each of the extractors on the cylinder. Do not use lock tight on the treads. The rod will be secured in the method I described. This is an old trick I learned while attending the Smith & Wesson Armorer's course many years ago.

NO.. proper torque will keep it from coming loose. Call S&W they will not recommend Loctite.
