I realize the K22's are fine little guns but sometimes this gunbroker bidding frenzy baffles me...
Two years ago was looking at these for $500 and they were plentiful.
Have we really come that far in 2 years?

This nice little unpinned K22 17-6 just sold for $825.00
just $25 under the buy now price of $898.
No box or docs and some little scratches from having been fired I didnt think it would go over $650.
If you consider the transer fees, tax and shipping its a $1000.00 gun.

MSRP on a brand new 617 is about $750, and a Model 18 copy about $800 .
I suppose that its the better investment of the three,
Makes me wonder why S&W doesnt offer the old blued 6 shot version again.....Wood grips cant cost much to reproduce.

Well the price was certainly higher then I would pay but I must say that the combat grips on that gun have steller color and grain and I've seen them sell for $250+ just for them.

Do you think part of the justification for the price is because it is the 4"bbl version? I bought one a little over a month ago with original box and papers for less, but it was a 6"bbl model.

i think the 4" has a little to do with the price...personally, i bid on this gun several times (it has been relisted for weeks) and bid from $500 to $600 to no avail. would love to have the gun to go with my 8 3/8" 17-6 but not for $8 bills!!!

My LGS has a 17-3 in box, papers, no tools with a very faint line. $995.00. I bought one like it 5 years ago for $325.00 with tools. The times they are a changing.

If the extra few inches makes the gun double in value maybe you should consider having a gunsmith cut it down and remount the front site....WOW

I agree on the 4" adding to the value. I have not seen any 4" 17s, so I think they are a rare bird. Kinda like my nickel 17-6 from the '12 Revolver' series. I am glad I have it, but don't want to buy another.

I like mine better.

I think these are the nicest combat grips I 've ever encountered.

i had a wonderfull transaction with art,(((fyimo))) and the l frame combat stocks he got are the nicest i have seen out of a couple hundred pair.they were really unique.
the k/l frame combat stocks can have a 50 to 100 swing ,with the decideing factor being the grain, color, and finish.
arts were beautifull and well worth at least 175 to 200
some plain jane combats are at the lower end are are worth 100 or so.
i see the same variation in the round butt grips.
some round butt grips ,finger groove combats, are plain jane.and are worth 85 to 120
some are absolutely stunning and are worth 50 to 100 more.
my 2 cents

Stunning grips, yes.

Stunning amount of money for a not-that-uncommon 22 revolver too, IMHO.

They are nice but not that nice. I paid 525 for mine that is 98% in the box in ca just this last year. Those are nice grips but they are not that nice.

Gee, two years ago, I purchased a four-inch 17-6 from a fellow Forum member for $600, including shipping--I feel like a GENIUS now!
It will turn out to be a good INVESTMENT in the near future, I'm sure. Paulie686.

It was me that bought it :). I've been hunting one to match my 16-4 4" convertible (factory 32 H&R-32/20 cylinders). It was more than I wanted to pay, but that ended up being the reserve. As for paying too much if I got what I wanted does it matter? I'll get pictures of the twins together once the 17-6 comes in. And for those speculating on the total cost with FFL its $926 happily spent. Way happier knowing the 4" is coming in than if I'd been given a 6".

Dave I am envious..its a nice k22 ,
The expression is "nobody ever paid too much for a gun they just paid it too soon"
As long as you like it than its worth what you paid and at the end of the day its yours now.
I just bought a 1947 for $650 which is the most I have ever paid for a k22.
But Its a one liner in the gold picture box.

Engine49guy, I fell in love with the balance and feel of the 16-4 and wanted the matching k22. Not sure how rare the 17-6 with the 4" tube is but its taken the better part of a year to find one. I just saw another post on a 14-6 with the same set up so I guess thats the next quest in the set. I'm not a collector by any means just get the guns that turn me on. Right now its these 4" target k frames and Browning remakes of the classic lever guns (53, 65, 71, 86, 92 etc.) What can I say, I'm eclectic.

Well,, IF I was looking for a K-22 to match my K-32 Magnum model 16-4 I might also pay $800. for this one.

The 4" barrel does place a pretty good premium on the price in my
opinion.
Just what it is guys,, opinion. But I like the 4 inchers much more than the 6" ers.

The $825. auction price and $25. shipping would put it at $850. for me.
Not $1000.

Attractive gun and beautiful grips. But those of us who are patient will
not pay more than $100. for a pair of fingergroove anythings.

Goood luck in your searches.

I am curious about the numbers that S&W ran of these models with the 4" full underlug,
I know the 586 / 686 series seem to be plentiful and the majority (at least IMHO) seem to be my prefered 4" length.

For some reason it seems the .22lr was just not made in the numbers that the 17 to 17-4 was.
I suppose because it only lasted through one revision and seems to have been replaced by the 617 line rather quickly,
Compounded by the fact that it seems the majority of the ones that surface nowadays are 6" or longer.

Maybe it was the economy or low sales but the end result was things changed at S&W as they always do and the number of these little gems just cannot keep up with the sudden demand from the growing number of S&W enthusiasts.
The real law that applies to these things especially when not plentiful is "Something is worth exactly what people are willing to pay for it".

On a side note,
I dont know why but very often when I write an email I feel like I am being friendly, Then after I read it back it sounds like Im a wise ***...

Im sorry if my post came off negative ,

I dont know if I am shocked it went so high, or maybe a little jealous because I want one of these real bad, (along with a bunch of others)
Or maybe Im pissed at myself for not getting one when they were half what they are now and facing the fact that Im too cheap to
consider shelling out $900 for something I really want..

Probably a combination of all the above but I just want you to know Im not bashing you,
On the contrary I envy you and applaud you on your newest aquisition.
Congratulations
