Any body share their experiences with this load? I understand it is good self defense due to lower recoil, but how about performance on the other end?

Never shot a person with one. It has worked well on two 250# hogs and a 110# deer.

I think it is probably a great self-defense load. My only complaint is that it shoots way low in my Model 58, which is my only .41 mag.

OH, quit' 'cher belly achin'. Load 'er up with a 210, then a 175. The recoil from the 210 will get the gun up too high, and yer doubletap will put the 175 right on target. Make use of adversity. :D

Remember the 6 o'clock hold? Thats on the wall clock. If its hitting too low, aim for the ceiling above the 12 O'clock! Don't stop till the gun's empty.

:D :D

210, then 175. got it.

Actually I got some 255g lead 41's.... maybe if the 210 doesn't work out ....

I don't recall the Silvertip being called a low recoil round. It's listed at 1250 fps and the Cor-Bon 170gr is listed at 1275 fps while the 210gr Gold Dot is listed at 1280 fps. I suspect you might feel the Gold Dot's a little more than the others because of the extra weight.

The 145gr .357 Silvertip is considered a full power magnum, I always considered the .41 load the same -- a full load.

I should have framed the question around full mag loads, the 175 silvertip is LOWER recoil than the heavier full mag loads. There are other even LOWER recoil loads like the police load 210 @1000 fps and some cowboy action loads being offered.

Really looking at how the round performs. I had read somewhere long ago and in some other forgotten caliber, that the silvertips did not open up reliably.

Push any JHP over 1K fps and you will get reliable expansion assuming that you didn't clog up the hollow but the .41 mag makes a big hole so even if the HP doesn't expand it is still one potent round. The 1,250 fps velocity listed is from a 4" barrel so if you are using a 6" barrel you can add another 150 fps or more.

I've chronograped most of the .41 Magnum loads made.

From a 4" barrel:

Winchester 175 ST was running 1202 (1300 6")

Speer 210 GD HPs were 1185

CorBon 170 JHP 1273

Federal VitalShok 180 Barnes 1304

Winchester 240 PT 1185

Federal Fusion 210 1280

Remington 210 SP 1247 (1310 6")

Federal 210 JHP 1266 (1350 6")

If you look at the Buffalo Bore line, they have a 170 JHP that from a 4" is probably doing 1400 fps...that is a "full" load. I believe that Georgia Arms also has a 210 GDHP that is faster than the Speer version. I was surprised the Speer was so slow...

As to how well the 175 ST works...it is very highly rated in the Stopping Power series of books at 90+% OSS....ymmv however and best to shot again.....

Mea culpa, Dick. However, in my 58, a dead-on hold prints the Silvertip load well below the sights at all conceivable self-defense ranges past about 3 yards. I kind of like the idea of a 210 followed by a 175, but Cameron Hopkins chewed my butt back in about 1982 for suggesting that a pair should be fired from one sight picture.

-- a full load.

I'm not sayin' you've got any common sense at all. But if on the outside chance you do....

You'd consider my response above to be one of those (a full load). :D

Better still, you can grow tomato's in the full load of my response!
