.17HMR Rifles-Any recommendations?

My only .17 is a CZ 453 heavy fluted barreled Varmint model.... the 453 is a 452 with a single set trigger! :)

I got it about 4/5 years ago "new old stock" dated "08" at a little gun shop in the middle of nowhere

I own CZ rifles in .17 hmr, .22lr, .22mag and .223/5.56. My favorites are the FS/mannlicher stocked guns!

Keep in mind that .17 ammo is more expensive than most .22lr stuff.... unless you're bored shooting sub-MOA groups at 100yds; I'd stick with the .22lr!!!!

.17 HMR

I picked up a T/C Contender carbine barrel back in the early 2000’s. A great woodchuck killer up to 200 yards! My best group was less than 3/8 inch (I can’t find the target to verify it) and it consistently shoots under 3/4 inch when I do my part. I usually shoot Hornady ammo.

I have a large number of CZ’s in 22LR, 22MAG, and 17HMR for a reason, I like the price point for beautiful walnut stocked rifles. Plus I have varmint barrels and full stocks too! All are topped with quality Leupold glass.

I have experience with only one; a Ruger 77/22 mag I've had for years that I bought a Green Mountain fluted barrel for in .17 HMR. It shoots great, but ammo is pricey, at least 50% more than .22 magnum in my experience. I need to lay in some more, but walked away from some at Walmart earlier this week. Just couldn't make myself pay the asking, but I guess I'll have to at some point. They are great shooters and very effective on vermin.

Anyone run a Ruger Precision Rimfire in .17HMR? Got one in 22LR. I'm seeing one on the LGS shelf with a couple of Savages and that's it for .17HMR.

I too am a vote for CZ.. mine is a 452FS in 17HMR and it is a laser out to 100yards... I don't shoot it any farther.. my vision, not the CZ.. sorry I don't have first hand knowledge of the current 457... but I would look for one if I were in the market for a 17HMR

Love the Mannlicher look I have 452 FSs in .22lr,.22mag and a 527 in .223/5.56.......my best groups at 100 in .22mag are in the .9" range. All three wear 1-4x20 Leupolds.. perfect for Penn's Woods and small fields.

Shooting irons;

J&P Products LLC makes a nice peep sight blade (three sizes 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8 apertures) that fits the CZ rear sight. Brings that sight up a notch!! Under CZ rimfire parts on their website. $21 or all three for $59.

Skinner Sights also has some good action mounted peep sights.

I have a CZ 452 in 17HMR and have killed many, many prairie dogs with it. It's a great little rifle. Then I got hold of a CZ 457 in .22 Mag. and it's better yet. I think the 457 is the best deal for the money you can find these days, and I would happily recommend it in .17HMR.

Not rifle but dang - S&W! Everything but the price tag looks fantastic.

Is that the only S&W pistol in 17HMR?

I had a Henry with octagonal barrel that I had a whole lot of fun with. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the suggestions here.

Appreciate all the helpful responses. Gives me a lot to chew on before I make a decision. I agree the ammo isn't cheap, been seeing it online for about $15 for 50.

I have a 17HMR mine is an anschutz 1517 MPR.
I Really like the gun and cartridge
I was fortunate enough to buy both the gun and ammo early on.
I stocked up on ammo at 7-8 dollars a box.

I also shoot a lot of other cartridges and reload so I don't think I'd opt in at today's prices.

For what you intend a 22 hornet may be ideal.

Speaking of the Hornet I can load 50 for less than a box of 17 HMR will cost if you can find them

I have two Savages in 17 HMR: a 93R17 and a B17. I have tried several different Savage magazines in the 93R17 and still have occasional feeding problems. I have never had any problems with the rotary magazine in the B17.

Can’t speak to the CZ but I have a Ruger American with the mid weight barrel. The only grind I have with it is that it is ammo sensitive to the extreme.
It shoots groups small enough to elicit cries of Bull Sauce at 100 yards but only with CCI A17 ammo. No other ammo shoots near as well out of it.

My experiance as well. Can be boring on a calm day at 100 yards. Last range visit (last week) resorted to poofin' dandelion puffballs at 100yds, also turning dirt clods into fine topsoil. I lightened the trigger on my Ruger, easy to do.

As said, be sure you are comfortable with the availabilty and price of 17HMR ammo.
