A friend of mine has an 18-4 (non-pinned barrel) that he bought new. It has had less than one hundred rounds fired. He has talked about selling it, with original box. Very nice gun. I've told him that it's a desirable S&W. What's a fair price?

That's interesting as I have a Model 18-4, but it's barrel is pinned.
With original box I'd guess around $650.

The dash number of Model 17s and 18s was not increased when they quit pinning barrels.

I love Model 18s but I have not shopped for one lately. A few years ago I saw similar one pass through Cabela's Gun Library for $600 plus tax. It was there less than a week.

I'm a "pinned barrel fan"....I was a little disappointed that this one is not pinned. It's not a deal breaker for me though....

In the original box and "as new" with all paper work and accessories I'd say $650 - $700 is what they are going for these days. Examples with no box or paper work and in lesser condition would bring around $450 -$500.

The OP doesn't state the barrel length. I think these were available in 4 and 6-inch. If so, the 4-inch is the most desirable in today's market and would likely bring about $100 more.

If it's a model 18 then it would be 4 inch.

The model 17's starting with the -6's (IIRC) could be either a 4 or 6 inch barrel.

If it's as described, $650 would be a good deal.
Would not surprise me a bit to see it go in the 700s.

We rarely see them here and if they do pop up they are
closer to 900 than 600 in really good shape.
I've never seen a "beater" model 18 in these parts.

I thought I was buying a later Model 18, once. When the gun came and I looked in the frame cutout it was a 4-inch Model 17. The guy said he made a mistake. Bad eyesight. It was a bad stamp. He cut me some slack on the price and I kept the M17 even though I would of preferred a gun without a heavy barrel. With that tiny little 0.223" bore a standard barrel is heavy enough.

The advertised weight of .22 Combat Masterpieces and Model 18s was 36 ounces. They are comfortable all day in standard belt holsters yet heavy enough to hold steady for hunting. I own three of them, a looker, a finish worn shooter and a reblued one that I wanted primarily because it belonged to a good friend who was a tireless organizer of matches. It's been my observation that owners seldom sell them. I'll take mine to the grave with me.

I had an 18-3 that was like new with the box and all the goodies. I got an offer on it that was too good to turn done. So I now have an 18-4 that is in excellent condition and it doesn't have the pinned barrel but it shoots just fine that I paid $500 for with magna grips.

I dug up this excellent Combat Masterpiece thread started by Engine49Guy. Great chronological progression of the pre and post model # guns, including the .22 CM and later model 18 up to dash 4. Early -4 guns had pinned barrels, gone in later editions of the -4. Really of no importance for a shooter and only important if you collect such things.

I feel very blessed because my 18-4 is like new and I only paid $450 for it in a brother's friend's father in law's deal. Sweet shooting gun, my boys really like shooting it. Chambers are very tight though, and have to keep them clean. No oil allowed! I'll likely never part with mine unless it goes to one of my boys.

The Model 18-4 was the end of the Model 18 line (until reintroduced in the new MIM/IL "Classic series )

The 17-5 was available in 4", 6" and 8 3/8" barrel lengths with a wide rib and heavier barrel profile (Non shrouded ejector rod)

The early 17-6 had the same (Non underlug Heavy barrel) as the 17-5 but changed to a full underlug barrel available in 4",6" and 8 3/8" lengths so 17-6's are found with both barrel styles....(617 no dash shown with 17-6 )

Bumping this thread back up. I finally bought the 18-4 that I discussed in my original post. One owner gun. He claims less than 100 rounds fired. Original box, wax paper and docs. It has target hammer and target trigger. I'd have to think that those are probably not common on a Model 18.

Nice homie! You will love it. I have a M17 and M18 however I only shoot the 18! Not sure why however I always toss that one in the range bag. Post a pic if you get a chance. Model 18s rule. Enjoy.

Had a guy at the range offer me $1000 for my 95%+ 18-4 (78) W/ Executioner Stag grips and T-grip ($180+$30 value now)

Bought a nice shooter grade (90%+) earlier this year seller was asking $525.

I picked up a Very nice 15-3 last year and a beautiful model 67 the other day. A mod. 18 is next on my list.

I have a safe queen 18-3, pinned barrel, that I put about 50 rounds through. It has the box, papers, wrapper, and all. The S/N is 8K311**. Can someone date it for me and give a rough guess on value? Thanks in advance!
