Up to 1909 they were designed for black powder only. If in good firing condition, they probably won't blow up with smokeless, but a few rounds will stretch the lock or the frame.

The 1909 pistols had positive cylinder stops, the earlier ones only had grooves for the lock bolt.

Loading blackpowder cartridges is not that hard to do.
And extremly fun to shoot, i have one that i use for Cowboy Shooting.

does anyone know any history on the ivan johnson 1896 .38 short 5 shot revolver

Iver, Iver, Iver Johnson.
Est 1883 in Fitchburg, Mass. No such model as "1896", most probably a "Safety Automatic Double-Action" made in .22 rim, .32 cf. and .38 cf. Many varieties and configurations made from 1893 to 1950. Marginal value unless new in the box. Hope that helps.

thank you i was going off of what a guy told me about the gun he said it said 1896 on it thank you for the info

Does you pistol have a safety lever on front of the trigger like a Glock? Are the eyes on the owl in line with the grip screw or perpendicular to the grip screw or looking at you? Is the top latch a single post or a double post?

If you have no safety lever on the trigger, if the owls eyes are perpendicular, if the top latch is a double post, you have a 3rd model IJ, which was designed for smokless powder.

I shoot my 2nd model IJ's with factory equivalent smokeless loads. It's not like I'm shooting 200 rounds in a range session, I MAY shoot a box a year through them. A 1st model I will not shoot though.

It has four pins in the frame; thus it's post 1909 and safe for factory smokeless rounds. The safety in the trigger, a la Glock, is only found on hamerless guns. Rather unusual barrel length: 5 or 6 inches. They're fairly rare.
