About 7 or 8 years ago, I took my Godson shooting for the first time. Me and his Dad are like brothers and we've been friends since we were 12 (we're 51 now). His Dad isn't into guns, and his Mother is somewhat anti gun. She had a few gun related tragedy's in her life that have helped form her opinion. It was a miracle she let me take him shooting when he was 14 years old!

Long story short, out of all of the guns that I let him shoot (pistols - metal and plastic, and revolvers), my Godson fell in love with my 4" Model 19-4. I was very surprised, and very happy at the same time. I've found that most younger shooters gravitate to pistols, especially the newest and best advertised "tacticool" ones.

My Godson will be graduating from college next year, and I wanted to get him a special gift for the occasion. I thought about giving him my 19-4, but it's too clean and I'm afraid he wouldn't shoot it (plus I'm somewhat attached to it ;) )

I've been looking for the right gun, one that's in nice shooter condition. With the help of another forum member, I found this 19-2 that I think fits the bill nicely. According to Roy, it shipped in May of 1968. I'm very much looking forward to giving this gun to him, so much so that I probably won't be able to sit on it for a year. I've decided that I'll probably give it to him when he's home for spring break in March. Of course I'll tell him that if he doesn't graduate, I'm going to take it back! I know that won't be an issue. He's taking Electrical Engineering and currently has a 3.4 GPA, all while playing ice hockey and not missing many frat parties ;)

That is amazing! I know a lot of "Young" (like under 30) that have never shot a revolver. Much better than a hunk of plastic.

WOW! Would you consider adopting a 68 y/o? :)

Great looking revolver and an unbelievable graduation gift!

You're giving that one away and keeping a 19-4? Got to be a story behind THAT! I hope he realizes just how nice of a gift that will be. That's very generous of you.

I know it sounds crazy, but my 19-4 is cherry and complete with the box / docs

I want him to be able to shoot and use the gun that I give him without him worrying about beating it up and putting a bunch of character on it. This -2 looks great in the pictures, but it's already got some wear and character marks on it. A little bit of Flitz and coat of Ren wax has it standing tall, but it does have some zits. It just happens to be very photogenic. The stocks aren't factory stocks and the box isn't perfect. It's exactly what I've been looking for. A gun that he can be proud to show off, but not too nice that he'll be afraid to shoot and use.

Besides, I know that I'll be adding one or two more older 4" 19's to my collection ;)

What a lucky young man!!! I don't know you, but I wish I did!:)

Thank you for the kind words, but I think I'm the one who is lucky. He's always been a great kid, and he's really grown up to be a great adult and person. He has a good sense of values and family always comes first in his book.
He's also one hell of a Hockey player!

This picture was taken this past weekend when West Virginia played the University of Delaware.

I'm hoping this 19 will kick start him into being the next generation of S&W caretakers / shooters / collectors.

It is the solemn duty of Godfathers and Uncles to spoil their charges. I got the same feeling when I gave my youngest niece her 30-1 for her 21st birthday. It was not a surprise to her, though... I had encouraged her to take the NRA Safety Course in her 20th year in preparation for it... and yes, she can "shoot the lights out" with it! What a joy for me as well as for her. Good on ya for doing your best to be a great godfather!

That Model 19 is very, very nice, it is beautiful.

Your God Son will keep that one forever, I am sure.
