I recently puchased a used 19-4 and after getting it home noticed that after firing if the trigger is let out gently and then the trigger is pulled again in DA, it seems that something felt to be binding. After removing the side plate I can see that the sear is not fully engaging the trigger unless the trigger is allowed to "slap" forward. I did some disassembly then and noticed a good bit of wear on the rebound slide where it engages the hammer. I was able to compare the parts from the 19-4 with those from my 15-4 and decided to put the 15's rebound slide in the 19. It worked like a charm. Is it all that common for a rebound slide to wear like that to the point where the sear won't fully engage the trigger? It looks like I may have to order a gently used one. The only new ones I can find look to be mim. What do you all recommend?

ff,

I think you should try a new rebound spring first. They are inexpensive from Wolff, S&W, or Wilson, in 3 packs with varying spring rates. If that doesn't fix it, you can, then find a new slide or dress (stone) the angles on your old one.

Mike

Thanks for the reply Mike. Sorry I forgot to mention that I did try a new factory rebound spring and that didn't fix it. It seems that the rebound slide has so much wear that it just can't push the hammer up enough to allow the sear to fully engage the trigger. The hammer on the other hand doesn't appear to be worn much at all.

Like Mike said a new rebound spring might fix it,
The other usual problem is someone over polished the rebound seat on the hammer or the hammer seat on the rebound slide or both. They would take alot of shooting to wear down too much. If they still engage and lift the hammer enough to reset the sear if you apply a little force then a new spring would probably fix it. Sometimes if you lightly polish the front portion of the hammer seat on the rebound slide it will allow it to pop forward lifting the hammer enough to reset the sear.,as long as they still lift the hammer. Good luck ,Bob

Dawg, just saw your last post, so disregard my post, check Numbrich for the right part for your 19-4 , they usually have them and will send you the right one for your model. Bob

Thanks Bob, I just checked out Numrich. They have the part but I want to call and confirm that the part they have is an original machined part and not the mim part that Midway has for sale. I'm sure the mim part that Midway shows for model 19s would work, but I like to keep the internals original if I can help it.

That's the first time I have heard of a rebound slide neing worn down. I have more than 10,000 rounds through some of my competition revolvers and the internals are smooth.

I doubt that what you see is honest wear. More likely someone who did not know what they were doing stoned too much off of the edges of the rebound slide. Where to get a new one that is not MIM I do not know, but my guess is that is what you need. Of course without seeing it that IS just a guess.

I keep looking at the darn thing and the more I look the more I can imagine that someone has filed or stoned it. It looks awfully uneven like it was done freehand by someone with little patience, in comparison to the one from my model 15 that shows very little wear for all the rounds I've put through it. I'll be working on getting a replacement this week. Thank you everyone for your replies. You folks are a great comfort to a S&W addict such as I've become.:D

Just wanted to update this post and let everyone know that my 19 is back in action thanks to jimmyj. Replacing the rebound slide put her back in gear. And since everyone here loves pictures, I figured I'd give some S&W photography a shot. The rebound slide on the left is the "bad one", the one on the right is the used replacement.
