1911 recommendation

You might want to check out Colt. I believe they have some experience with the 1911 platform.

I dunno...it can be risky buying these newcomers to the market. You never know if they are going to be around tomorrow.

Nothing against Colt. They were just out of my price range when I bought the Norinco in the early 1990s. My father in law bought a Series 80 at the same time I bought my Norinco. His Series 80 would always jam on the 3d or 4th round. It didn't matter what mag he used, either his Colt mags or my Norinco mags. He had feed ramp work and the ejection port lowered and flared to try to cure the problem. Eventually he found out the breech block and the barrel were off axis and sold the S80. I understand Colt's QA/QC is much better now.

My comment above was in jest...Colt is the original, has been in continuous production, and is the oldest 1911 maker extant. So, I was trying to be "punny" when I called Colt a "newcomer to the market." ;)

What about a S&W 1911, I didn't read any comments on them.

Check out post #14.

I love my S&W 1911. Yes it is has a billboard, yes it has a FPS, yes it has an external ejector, yes it is accurate, yes it is reliable--no I will not sell it.

To all the people concerned about the external safety, as it wasn't the way JMB designed it, or are concerned about the reliability because Kimber couldn't get it right. Keep in mind S&W has been making guns for a little while, and a few of them have external extractors (feel free to double check me on that.) I have never had an extraction issue with my S&W 1911, my S&W 5906, S&W 2206, or the S&W 4566TSW I had.

I think you meant to write "extractor."

I agree with you...in fact, if you look at almost all other semi-automatic pistols except 1911s, they have external extractors. Kimber wasn't able to make it work (no surprise, that's normal for them) but it does work on S&W and SIG 1911s, and on virtually every other non-1911 pistol. The e-series S&W 1911 doesn't have the FPS, so it's an even better configuration, IMO...but the "standard" SW1911 is still a very fine gun.

Well now that we've named just about every brand available, I think we confused the hell of of him even more! LOL :eek:

For the price you mentioned the Ruger is a winner. For around $500 check out the Tisas Zig made in Turkey from Buds Gun shop.com. I had one for a couple of years, never had a problem with it. Plain GI and a good shooter.

I know that I am older than most of you guys but in the early days of Springfield Armory I and all of my shooting buds bought the GI model in a blister pac that you assembled yourself to make a 1911 .45 acp handgun. It came complete with all of the parts a magazine and some fuzzy instructions for competion. I have over the years become a great fan of the SA and recommend them to any shooter.
The Colt is my favorite because they started this madness but the SA is wonderful option.
The Rock Island Armory is also a great alternative especally for the price.
Lots to choose from but keep in mind that the first is just that, the first with many more to come.

I am also lazily looking for a 45 ACP 1911. I prefer a stainless or non-blued finish that will likely hold up better.

I own 26 1911 pistols - from a $4000 Nighthawk Custom Predator 2 to a $690 RIA. I love them all. Some excellent shooters in the < $1000 range include the Ruger, RIA and Metro Arms offerings.

I didn't have a Model 1911, so the big boys won't let me play with them, so I purchased a AMI Model 1911 at Rural King for $299.00 plus tax on sale. Negative issues with factory and reloads. (big boys still won't let me play with them-only American manufactured M1911s are accepted)
I remember that Rural King sale; I had just found a Tisas Zig1911 for $299 local (+ tax).

No problems with my Tisas as of yet. I know the purists despise an inexpensive, foreign-made 1911, but you really can't beat it at the price. It's amazing that for the price of both our guns combined, you really still are just getting into the 1911 market.

The exact same thing was said about my Norinco 1911A1 back in the early 1990s. Now Norincos are sought after as a solid reliable 1911.

When I bought my Norinco in the early 1999s (and I still have it) there were only a few 1911 makers in the market. Colt, of course, Auto Ordnance, Norinco, and Rock Island if I recall correctly. There may have been one or two more. That was a far cry from the sheer number of 1911 manufacturers and models today.

This year I finally bought a 1911 with more bells and whistles than my Norinco, a Ruger SR1911. I'm still breaking that one in.

I'm on way to you next time I drive down to Florida.
