I can't seem to find a S&W1911 so I am looking at a Taurus 1911. Have not had one and was wondering if anyone here has and what there thoughts were on the gun?

The Taurus PT-1911 is and EXCELLENT pistol for the money. Taurus makes a quality product that they stand behind.

I own a Taurus PT-1911 and can atttest to its quality, and functionality.

I have fired thousands of rounds through it and have had NO failures of any kind. The gun is accurate, and reliable and ALOT of fun to shoot.

This is certainly NOT a 'cheap' gun by any means. It comes loaded with features you would pay a ton extra for on other 1911s. They are all hand fitted, with parts matched to each other. Almost a 'custom' gun right out of the box.

As far as I am concerned, you can't go wrong with a Taurus PT-1911. Price, quality, reliability, and functionality are ALL top notch.

Curious - why can't you find a S&W 1911? They're all over the place around here.

While I've heard mostly good things about the Taurus 1911, I'm not a big fan of their products (I have a couple).
I'd hold out for the S&W.

I have been looking online at Buds Guns mostly. A buddy of mine bought one from them in early January for $731. I have also been looking in the classifieds but perhaps I have missed an offering there. Don't really care for gunbroker; I'm not very trusting I guess. I have bought off classifieds in this forum with confidence however.

I have a S&W 1911 and it is THE most accurate, out-of-the-box 1911 I've ever had (also had/have Colt & Kimber). I could not be more pleased with it.

My shootin' pard has the Taurus 1911. It is accurate and reliable. Other than the fact that the grip screws are a different size (resulting in swapping grips being a little bit of a hassle) and (I think) the sights not as easily swapped out, he could not be more pleased with it.

The price being the same or close, I'd opt for the S&W; if it's a huge price difference or you've just got to have it now, I wouldn't hesitate on the Taurus.

How could you even say S&W and taurus in the same breath?

When they're good, they're good, but when they're bad, you're screwed on the warranty shipping with Taurus. Strongly suggest you buy from a dealer who will ship the Taurus back for you if warranty work is needed. A couple times back for "free" warranty work and the savings evaporate. Ask me how I know.

Frequent complaint with their 1911 is finish is fragile.

I own a PT-1911, and have been totally satisfied. It is certainly a good value for the money. I also owned a PT-92 and found it to be totally reliable and thought it was as good as its Beretta counterpart. However I have not dealt with Taurus' service department, so I cannot comment on that.

Sometimes they come and go on Bud's Gun Shop but this is what they have today for 1911 S&W:

Try out Scottsdale Gun Club too:

They used to have a nice 1911PD model I was looking at, but its not there today. As for Taurus, what has been said about when its good its great, but when its bad its really bad is true.

Taurus is JUNK. I would buy Rock Island Armory before Taurus. RIA pistols actually work.

It took my smith almost a year to get a couple of small parts for my Taurus 99. Both parts would fit in a first class envelope.

It was a good gun, but dealing with taurus just wore me out.

I have sent guns back to Smith on their nickel for routine maintenance items like cleaning and replacing springs. They are hard to beat for customer service.

Today I swapped a PT1911AR for a S&W 1911. The Taurus was accurate and never failed to chamber or extract, but out of the box gave quite a few failures to fire (light primer strikes). I had a local smith go over it, and the FTF issue seemed to have been cured. I was looking at replacing the internals just to put my mind at ease, but finally decided I'd be better off just trading the gun.

Taurus customer service can be hit or miss- they have a lifetime warranty like S&W and Springfield Armory, but they are also generally known to take quite a while to get stuff done.

The PT1911 looks good on paper, and if that's all one can afford, then so be it. However, the S&W, Springfield Armory, and other makes are easily worth the extra.

I took a Springfield GI and built it from scratch into what it is today. I just need to have it refinnished. I did it for fun. Not for economy. I now own a $2000 1911! But it was a blast of a project and I enjoyed tweaking it's progress every step of the way. It's a one of a kind that I'll have for life. As far as Taurus goes, they have made GREAT strides in the last 4-6 years. I've owned one and put 5000+ FLAWLESS rounds thru it. I just couldnt stand the trigger pull (PT 111 Millenium Pro) so I sold it. Would I own another? No, but thats just my personal preferance. Would I recommend one---based on my experiance---absolutley. Their 1911 is great bang for the buck. Is it an Ed Brown or a Les Baer? Of course not. Look at your budget first, if you need a 1911, buy the BEST you can afford. Thats my 2 cents. Good luck.
Mike.

I believe that CDNN is selling the S&W1911 for $769.99.

I actually own a PT 1911. It is a fine pistol. In 1911s I also have a Kimber, Dan Wesson, and a Colt. The Taurus is holding its own in that group. Anyone calling the Taurus "junk" probably doesn't own one.

I wouldn't call one junk. I would submit that they aren't up to the standards of other makes, but then again, neither is the price. The PT1911 is just fine at its price point (as in the RIA Tactical), but the moment the price tag gets into the same ballpark as a S&W, Springfield, or other 1911 of generally similar feature set, I can't imagine recommending the Taurus. According to the OP, the prices he's seen are pretty well similar- that makes me recommend the S&W in that range.
