I saw a NIB Colt Commander in bright stainless at a shop recently & the price was $795. It has a 5" barrel. After doing much research I believe it's a Model 04691 but did not get the model # off the box (I need to do that Monday). My research shows the price is in the ballpark for that model but everything I read says it should have a 4 1/4" barrel. Only the word Commander is stamped on the slide. Aynone familiar with these "O" series guns that might be able to explain the 5" barrel on it. I'm very tempted to just buy it since it looks so good but I'm hopping my guess is right on the model because of the bright stainless finish. I don't want to overpay either on this model. The only other model with a 5" barrel is 01091 but that is a Gov't model.

Howdy,

The Commander and the Govt are both great guns. The Gov. model is a little easier to shoot because of the extra weight and length.
How are you measuring the barrel length? That can make a difference.

I didn't even handle the gun, I looked at it thru the display case & it was marked 5". It looked like a 5" length but that's not to say I'm right. I'll just have to look at the model number on the box when I go back Monday. I'm about 99% sure I'll buy it just because of the highly polished stainless appearance. From everything I've been reading on the web, S&W has been doing some odd things occasionally with some of the 1911's depending on what year they were built. Until I get that model # off the box, I won't really know what I'm buying. Thanks for the response.

The 'Bottom Line' is that "it" is either a Commander Model and has 4-1/4 inch barrel OR "it" has a 5 inch barrel and is the full sized Government Model.

About the ONLY exception to this would be a Commander Model that has had a longer barrel fitted for some 'special' purpose such as for a Suppressor or Compensator.

If the Slide had "Commander" on it then it could have any number of different Model numbers on it; simply because the Commander is not a new Model to the Colt line up.

What was maked 5"? Was it the dealers tag or a label on a box? As others stated COMMANDERS are 4.25" PERIOD.

Went back to the store this morning & the Colt he had was sold. He didn't have any S&W 1911's at all. He had a Colt 1991 series model 04091u Commander that was NIB in SS which I landed up buying because the price was right, He gave it to me for about $720 ($760 out the door after tax). I thought that was a fair price. I'll look for a S&W 1911 next month..
