I have the S&W 1911 E sc and want to replace the grips. I am not sure if I will go with standard width grips or slim grips. Subsequently, I may have to change the grip screw bushings depending on what grips I select.
My question is; are the grip screws screwed in or staked in?
Finally, is there anyone out there that has actual experience on replacing the grip screw bushing on this particular model?

Don't know about your gun but originally bushings were screwed in and then staked to keep them in , Now days manufactures seam to use a liquid thread locker such as Lock Tite on the bushings to hold them in place. Lock tite can be overcome by using heat from a soldering iron held on the bushing .Once heater to @ 400 it breaks down and the bushing can be removed .

Grip Screw Bushings

Do yourself a favor and don't mess with bushings until you have a complete set of new bushings on hand. Removing old bushings usually results in the mangling of that bushing enough that replacement is necessary.

Just wanted to give this another shot if anyone knows for sure if the grip bushings on the this model is staked or installed with loc-tight?
Also, I'm still seeking anyone that has specific experience with this particular model? S&W 1911 sc Commander.
Thanks,

If they are staked you should be able to see the stake marks from the mag well. Just shine a light in there and take a peek at the lower two with the screws removed.

I have one along with the another S&W 1911. The other is not staked. I will check the Sc this evening and reply.

Can't speak to the S&W but my Springfield 1911 were screwed in with thread locker. I did buy the BROWNELLS - MAGNA-TIP® 1911 AUTO BUSHING DRIVER after I mangled the first one. Great tools.
Good luck

Checked my Sc and the bushings came out with little effort. Be sure to use a proper fitting screwdriver. I have a Wheeler set for my guns so I don't bugger things up. What grips are you considering? I have CT rosewoods on mine and like 'em.

I took my grips off and looked at the bushings and it appears that they are NOT staked. I am sure that they used some type of loc-tight however.
Subsequently, my confidence level is pretty good on removing the bushings and replace them with the slim fit.
Thanks for all that responded.
The Zebra
PS: I ordered VZ slim grips with black and gray layers.

Project Complete

Here is my update! I heated the factory screw bushing and they came out fairly easily, although not usable for another installation. I noticed that when the threaded bushing hole cooled, I saw saw some tannish residue, most likely from some type of loc-tite.
The install of the slim fit screw bushings was easy, fast and secure with a small dad of blue loc-tite. Than went the installation of my new VZ G-10 slim grips. I did purchase the small rubber o-rings to go over the new screws (also purchased from VZ). As you can see, it is now much thinner than the factory grips.
So, here it is all done and ready for duty!
Thanks in advance to all who responded with their tips and info.
