I am stoked!! All I need is the lanyard ring and clean some lead out of the barrel. It was languishing on GB with no bids so I placed the minimum bid and she's mine for under $900. Can anyone place the date?

I would definitely replace the lanyard ring. I think it is the same as the Victory model ring, as I have seen them advertised to fit either one. Sarco will have one, or watch Ebay for one.

I would gently remove the grips and see if the original owner left the retaining pin in the frame for the ring, as that makes it a tiny bit easier than having to fit or find one. Replacing it is a five minute job if you already have the pin.

By the way, very nice looking "honest" gun...I have gotten to where I like a little wear commensurate with the gun's age.

Be careful when you buy a replacement lanyard ring. It is NOT the same as the one for Victory models. The Victory rings are round and the 1917s are 'flattened', much wider than tall. The retaining pins are different too. The 1917s are much thicker than the ones for the Victory models.

Also, very NICE looking revolver for being over 100 years old! Everything looks good. The serial number stamped on the cylinder looks to match the one on the butt (both ending in '52') so original to the gun, the grips look good and solid, just a few dings on the bottom, there is a lot of blueing on the frame and barrel, and the color case on the trigger and hammer look good too. Congratulations!

My S&W 1917 had been buffed with a wire wheel sometime before I got it to remove some surface rust I guess. Flaming bomb Ordnance stamp is totally gone. So mine is a shooter.

You sure about that? The pictures in the Victory data base thread show different.

Look at the pictures on page 140.

Don't know...I know I see them advertised as a simultaneous fit for either the 1917 or the Victory, but some offer them separately? I don't own a 1917, so I can't compare.

There are two listed as 1917 ring assemblies on Ebay now...$25 for a repro and $39 for an original.

Just for the record, I hate you.;)
Of all the guns I have sold, traded, and just given away my 1917 S&W is the only one I truly miss. Someday I believe that the gun will find its way back to me.

Lanyard rings: 1917 vs. Victory. Well I was quite sure they were different until members chimed in saying that they were the same. I have a S&W 1917 and a Victory and mine are different, if I remember correctly. My Victory is in another state right now but I will be retrieving it soon, so I will compare shortly.
I'm old, but too old to learn something new about old revolvers.

The lanyard rings for Vics and 1917s are the same dimensions. Most Vic rings were some form of Blue. 1917 rings were case hardened.

I picked it up today!! Shot 6 rounds through it to make sure everything worked. It did. The trigger was as smooth as butter. Also, I had asked my buddy if he had any moon clips. He said no. In fact he had 14 loaded in the spare ammo bin and I told him about them. I asked if they were for sale and how much. He said give me $20 for them. I tossed him another $20 since they were loaded.

I am geeked!!

sweet pick up. Only recently have I been looking for one. Have not seen one locally yet. Gonna add it to my list for the gun shows.
