I'm new to the forum but look forward to many discussions and enlightenment! I collect S&W's myself and enjoy the revolvers most, although I love the autos too. I am looking at a 1917 model w/serial number in the 38000 range...it is in good condition with about 80% bluing left, small amount of pitting is evident; lanyard ring is intact and it appears to have the correct grips which are not broken or badly dinged...any ideas on what the value is for this? My bluebook is a few years old, so I'm not quite sure what these are going for now...

I guess let me be the 1st to say.
#1 welcome to the forum
#2 Pics would be helpful

If the finish truly is original I would guess ~$500.00 +/-

With only 80% blue left, it's a shooter grade gun, so the $500 range is about right, assuming it's in good tight mechanical condition. There's a lot of these around and shooters, Both Colt & S&W Model 1917s can be found in that price range.

You don't want to go by the "Blue Book", as the prices listed are unrealistic. It shows a 70% gun worth $875, and a 90% gun $1200. You see a lot of dealers at gun shows with these prices on their guns, but you see them pack them up and take them back home at the end of the show.
