Should there be 3 stamped serial numbers. bottom of butt, on barrel flat and end of cylinder?

Oh, and I forgot about the one INSIDE of the sideplate.

Is this specific to 1917s? Ever sideplate I remember looking at closely on an older gun has the soft fitting number, not the serial number.

Not contradicting, just asking. I have not investigated this, so I am reporting an impression.

EDIT: I see Guy wondered about that too. And first. :D

The number inside of the side plate is the assembly/work number. It should be the same as the number on the grip frame under the grips and the yoke & frame opposite the yoke, it hose parts are original tot he gun. The assembly/work number has no relation to the serial number. The serial number should appear on the places mentioned above,UNLESS the part is a replacement, then it may. or may not, carry a number. Ed.

Also, the inside flat of the right grip panel should be stamped.

I don't believe the serial numbers were stamped on the inside of the right grip panels. Mine isn't, it's written in pencil. Victory models were stamped. I don't think they started stamping them til after the 1917 time period.

You may be correct, Ken. My 1917's are stamped, but it is a 1934 Commercial model. Now my 1884 .32 DA has the number scratched into the hard plastic, but my 1924 .44 HE's is missing the pencil marks.

If the piece is a martially marked US army model 1917 and it still carries its original grips then the right grip will be numbered to the gun written in pencil as per the photo of my example. The revolver may have undergone various refurbishment either factory or arsenal, in which case the right grip may well carry no number. The other locations above are correct.
