1917 served with the US Army in Russia

Been awhile since I read or looked at my copy. I do remember see pictures in it showing troops armed with Webleys and a store about truning them in before leaving Archangle. Do not remember any thing about when or where they were issued.

Now there might have been some M1917's there but I don't know if a "Corporal" would be the person to get one.

I can't remember the reference-CRS disease-but I believe that due to the nature of the trench fighting in WWI, General Pershing wanted all of the troops to be issued handguns. Remember, Alvin York was a corporal when he earned the MOH.

Muley Gil,
My comment was along the line that an officer would make sure he got the good American stuff (S&W M1917) and the lower ranks get the second class junk (British Webley). Anyway, the fighting on the "Railway Front" wasn't anything like the Western Front. Although there were defended strong points, there was no real front line face to face static fighting. Hit and run attacks by the Bolsheviks and the extreme cold were the norm.
