Here's a cool find. Model 1955 with low serial range. Came with later target stocks. It went through Cannon's Guns in Montana back in 1988. I assume it got the trigger work done there. Maybe some of you are familiar with the outfit and can chime in. The action feels very nice. Trigger, hammer, and cylinder face are polished and the mainspring edges got treated as well. With the 5 inch configuration it's a pretty slick gun. I'm looking forward to shooting it in the future. Currently the smallest 45 I cast is the Lee 230TL truncated cone bullet. Looking at the target from Cannon's my loads will probably print high.
I'm thinking the barrel was cut non-factory to 5 inch but who knows. Another interesting thing is the box is a 1950 which has the zero marked out and 5 scribbled on for 1955. As its an early 143xxx range serial I guess they were transitioning and still using the older 1950 boxes. The serial is marked couple places with a white or grey grease pencil. The 1962 date stamp on the inside of the lid is curious. Perhaps it shipped pretty far out of sequence. Barrel length marked 6 1/2" with no marking or correction otherwise. Grip frame doesn't show any factory return marks nor are there any elsewhere on ejector shroud. The muzzle is rounded but there is a slight ledge just before rounding off. Also came with tools and the old grip pin. Another small flathead screw is in there but I'm not sure what it was for unless maybe front of sight base strap.
I pulled the primer pocket out and tightened the strain screw. There seems to be plenty of tension to whack any primers. I also removed the targets and put on some spare generic magnas on. Whether or not it's factory it's a cool gun. I kind of like the fact that someone before set it up just how he wanted it.
