I just purchased this Model 29 made in 1959 (need confirmation). 4-screw (doah!) Paid full price for it but I've wanted one for a l-o-n-g time and the condition is excellent.

We can't help you much without a serial number. As you know, there are no manufacture dates available from S&W. They only kept records of the date it was shipped from the factory.

However, that's a beauty! Congrats on the find.

congrats, that's a beauty. and the cokes. that just kicks it up a little more if that's possible. VERY NICE. did i every mention that i like nice grips and those are VERY NICE.

thanks for sharing. krs/kenny

I obtained a very similar Model 29 (no dash) on December 8, 2018 at a live auction. You say full price - well I guess I did the same since it was the full winning bid price plus a 10% buyer's premium. It also came with Coke's and in a nice presentation box with all the goodies. Mine is serial number S 207987. It was shipped from the factory in January of 1962.

My full price was $1,615.00; although prices have seemed to of really shot up in the last few years.

Your "full price" is a lot more attractive than mine assuming equal condition. Looks to me like you got a "discounted price" by about $1k; before four years of gun price inflation of course. Nice buy! Pictures?

$2,025 on GunBroker plus credit card fee and 5.5% Maine sales tax (which is total BS but whatever)

I don't think you overpaid at all, fair price for one in nice condition. The correct box and tools are another $500-$700 though (for the early box; maybe a little less for the clamshell box). Not sure which would be correct for your gun. Doc44 would know though. Enjoy it.

The correct style of case depends on when the 44 was shipped. The mahogany presentation case for the 44 Magnum was in use by 1960 and featured a "clamshell" interior. If the 44 Magnum was shipped in 1959, it could be in a mahogany case with a cloth interior (I have only seen a couple of these) or a dark blue case with a clasp style latch (like the one shown in post #14).

Congratulations! Great score.

Not as pretty, and no case, but my well loved 4 screw. Shipped Feb. 1958

I apologize for the quickie pics of the case. The gun fits barrel pointing to the right. The hinges and clasps are screwed on, not nailed. The bottom is similar to hardboard - definitely not real wood.

And thanks to everyone for the nice comments and information!

TheTinMan...The case you have is at least forty years newer than your 44 Magnum. It was issued with the Model 29-10 or the 50th Anniversary 44 Magnum in 2006.

Once you find out when your 44 Magnum was shipped, the correct style of case can be determined.

Wow, Nice find! I'd be afraid to own one in that condition for fear I'd ding it up somehow. Only way I'd consider paying that much is if I could find one from 1956 (birth year). So is it unfired? The pictures posted look like it could be.

It has been fired. My bet is someone bought it and a box of full house 44 Magnum shells. Went to range, shot a few, said "that's no fun, but she sure is pretty" and locked it up for the next 60+ years.

I have a lettered pre mod 29 4 screw shipped April of 1957. I didn't realize they made them much after that date. Mine looks like the day the gunsmith handed it to the shipping department along with black/blue case in fantastic condition. Paid $4,200 if any one cares. This was 3 months ago. I'm happy with it. Condition in guns is everything!
