1964-2014...The .41 Magnum

I always wanted a M58 and one day a couple years ago a guy from my church who new I liked guns called and said he was selling some guns for a lady whose husband had just died. Said he had M58 and wanted 700 bucks for it. I checked it out and it was and SFPD stamped gun from about 1966 in about 98% condition with Pachmeyers. I talked him down to $650 and loved shooting the gun with mid power loads but ammo was expensive. The gun was a lot more valuable than what I paid and I didn't want to put any wear on it, so I sold it.

Here it is minus the Pachmayr grips. I'm still tickled pink to have it. Now, if I could only get my hands on the eternally elusive SAPD 58.

For those that don't reload, Lost River Ammo (Mackay Sagebrush on here) now has two loads...their original 215 SWC at 1200 fps and now a target round with a 215 coated SWC at 900 fps.

I've tried their 1200 fps load and it is almost exactly like the 220 Keith with 10.0 grains of UNIQUE load that I have used for top end S&W loads for years. MUCH better control than the hotter loads rounds...

The new target velocity round should be great. I've used 8.0 of UNIQUE for going on 50 years which equals the 950 fps of the original 210 grain factory POLICE load, but without all the barrel leading...

1983 25 yards DA with a Keith 215 from Linotype...wish I could still shoot like that...

About 2007 50' DA with a Berry's plated 210...low shot was the first and aiming point for the rest...

Still own both guns....

That 215grn SWC @ 900fps is, roughly, equivalent to the original “City” police load.

The same bullet @ or near 1200fps is equivalent to the “Highway Patrol” load, intended for better penetration against auto metal and glass during felony car stops. It was also intended for rural applications such as when a deputy sheriff patrolling the countryside was called upon to dispatch a large critter, like an unruly cow on the loose.

In my M58 I run coated 215grn or 220grn boolits over 7.5-8.0grns Unique for the City cop load and they hit virtually to POA with the gun’s rear notched sight.
