I have come across a 1970's Model 36 with a 1 7/8 barrel, square butt, that has never been fired and in the box. The guy wants 450$ for it and is pretty firm on that. I looked at the gun today and it is a beauty, I'm just skeptical on the price. I didn't notice if it had a pinned barrel or not, which I hear would increase the value. What do you guys think? Good buy?

If its the correct box w/docs and tools, I'd say yes. The correct box imo is worth 50.00 or more.

Load the pics if you get it..

Ditto to what 01shm said. I bought one last year for $350, in very good but not mint condition, without box or papers, and didn't think that was a bad price.

It has the original box, papers, and cleaning brush. Are square butt model 36s somewhat rare? I haven't seen to many myself.

Not really rare, but not as common as the round butt. I don't recall when S&W stopped making them, but they haven't been produced for a number of years. Personally, I prefer the square, because with a Tyler T grip it feels great in my hand.

It's a reasonable price, in my opinion. Here's my track on the model:

Smith & Wesson 36 Revolver in .38 Spl. Bluebook of Gun Values (31st Edition) indicates between $380 in 95% condition and $590 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 53 recorded prices for this model gun from $284 to $600 over a period of 2 Yrs 11 Mos ending December 16, 2010. The average price as of that date was $394. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $822.

Here's the way the data charts out:

You can see the Average Price Trend was at about $420 as of July 2010. Better examples would command higher prices, especially with box, papers, tools, etc. (Note the chart is 10 prices and about six months behind the data.)

Bob,

Thanks for the chart on the Model 36....now I can prove to my wife that this S&W addiction I have is actually a sound investment strategy.
Seriously...nice work!

Cap
You're welcome, Cap! Good luck with that strategy...
