what a beauty! looks a lot nicer than my 686-1 that I had to send back to S&W thanks to Hubba Bubba. "gonna be a few more weeks"
My serial number is AUT25XX so they might have known each other in the factory.

I have the exact same gun. My dad bought it for me new in 1987. Although I've shot mine quite a bit it still looks new with all the paperwork and original box like yours. My serial number starts with AWZ which is after yours, but I have an earlier Spec. Ord. number of 7253 (Julian Date) of September 10, 1987.

Your prefix is AWM with Spec. Ord. number 7278 puts it October 5th, 1987.

Very nice 686! Brings back memories! My very first handgun was a 6" 686 bought new in 1987!
