I guess this shouldn't make me ill but for some reason it does. You've been looking for a certain pistol/revolver and someone has it for sale. You pm them about a question and next thing you know, someone who's made their first post snags it with an "I'll Take It". Sort of chaps my rear end.

I'd be more concerned when the first post is "For Sale". I can't fault whoever wasn't bashful. I hope your rear end recovers.;)

When I've sold guns via the internet, I've always had an unspoken rule that if someone opens a line of communications on a gun with me, by emailing or sending a PM, then they in effect are like the customer in a gun shop who is looking at a gun. The next guy can have it when the first one passes on it. It has happened that way a couple of times, and I think it is the only fair way to go about it.

If I owned a gun shop, I would never pull a gun from a customer's hands ( I have had that done to me btw), who was looking at it, just because the next guy to come along says he wants it. The internet shouldn't be any different.

That's a good way to put it, and contrary to my thinking which has been "I'll take it!" trumps "PM sent" or anything else. I don't know that my thinking will change, but your opinion helps me to see the other side of the argument anyway.

:) Ever tried Preparation H? It works for me. :D:D Don

Nope, that burns. Gold Bond works better for my tender skin.:)

Sure, and understandable per the rules. However, it's the guys that haunt the gun forums for the sole purpose of snatching up a deal that bugs me without any rapport with others in the forum on topics or posting any worthwhile threads themselves. They're purpose is to buy here, sell for a profit elsewhere. I think you should have a certain amount of posts before you can sell/buy items. Just my opinion-nothing more.

It might be worth discussing with Lee if, as a seller with an established post count, a forum member could state in a "for sale" advert that individuals with less than X post counts must contact seller before an "I'll take it" is posted. It's done all the time on 'Bay to protect sellers from inexperienced/phony/know nothing bidders.

I had contacted a seller on here, and we'd made arrangements for PayPal and the sale was pretty much a done deal. I had also posted a "pm sent" on the thread. But because I don't use the exact words "I'll take it", someone else got the purchase, even though the seller and I had wrapped it up. Seems like the buyer and seller should be able to work out a deal, rather than having to use specific language.

I tried asking for something like that. I do not even use the classifieds that much if at all. Many forums have a minimum post count before a member can access the classifieds. Of course a new member can just make some useless posts to build up to the magic number so that was the logic behind not doing it. I would still rather see 25 useless posts and you would have an idea of who you are potentially dealing with. JMO

I agree it can be frustrating. I happened along a beautiful CS1 not too long ago on this forum. The seller did not post pictures but rather said e-mail for pictures. I posted "I'll take it pending looking at pics" and e-mailed him. When I came back to the computer a few minutes later, someone had posted an more definite "I'll take it", and it was already sold to him. I was pretty irritated that the pics couldn't have been posted on the forum or a link. (pics were lovely by the way...oh well).

laissez faire

I believe in a free market.
Sellers set their terms.
If you need for me to set the terms, we need to talk about my commission. :D

Sticky: NOTE about "I'll Take It"

Why would anyone expect "I'm interested, I have questions, or would you take ????" to trump "I'll take it."

Just like any other form of sale, the first person to say i'll take it, at the offered price, gets it. I have always updated my post with "SOLD Pending funds" to let people know the status of the sale.

I have no problems negotiating on price or shipping, or answering questions, but I'm not going to lose a sale over it.

g conway nailed it,while some one is dithering with can you do this or that, if one can decide and says "I'll take it" he/she wins the prize. I don't see anything wrong with that approach. I have sent pics, answered questions and then never heard another word from the party asking, maybe he had forgot to check with the wife, girlfriend or what ever but see no reason to give him priority over a firm "I'll take it".

I'm not going to buy an item without at least seeing a few pics of what I'm getting. Some don't post pictures at all but indicate they'll send them pending your email address, etc. That gives someone else who's gambling and has no idea what it looks like to hit the "I'll Take It" button to bump you out of the deal. That's just not right in my book.

I've had it both ways. Had guns sold to someone else when i was
the first "I'll take it". And i've also been the first "i'll take it" after
2 or 3 guys ahead of me just PM'ing the seller. Does'nt matter to
me one way or the other. But if Lee or the seller says first "I'll
take it" wins the item then everybody, sellers and buyers, should
respect and abide by those rules. I would just like to see some
consistency to the rules across the board.

I agree.I tried to buy an item and the seller posted crummy pictures ( I know he posted professional pics before) I asked for better pictures and some more details on the item. This seemed to be too much to ask so he basically ignored me and stated I asked to many questions. Sorry I am not sending x amount of dollars to some unknown person without some clear idea of what the item looks like.

Who says theyre out to buy and flip for a profit? You know how many times ive searched for a specific gun online only to find the "for sale" ones on boards like this? No stores carried them, no one. So should i have made a hundred or so posts just to buy it if it was still available? And If im the seller your money is just as green as the guy with 0 posts.

I will always go with the first I'll take it with no conditions as long as the rules allow it. Lot's of tire kickers and request for more pictures out there. Seller's choice.

How can anyone not understand, "I'll take it."?

TAKE IT

Well, if you want your jaws to really get frosted, try being a first, 'I'll take it' only to drive 20 miles home and find out someone offered more money and got it. It DOES happen. Also, just how many photos do you have to see? Try playing 60 questions and then having to start all over with another buyer. Yeah, that happens as well. :)

I've bought 3 guns on this (really great!) forum all by just happening to get the first "I'll take it" on record. I've been beaten many times. The whole process reminds me of pigeons feeding but I can't think of a better way to do it. Just gotta be ready to "peck" fast!

I can understand both sides. But selling anything out from under a person that has a legitimate question is wrong. At work if a customer has a question, I answer it to the best of my ability. If the next customer inline flashes a wad of cash, he still has to wait his turn. The internet should not be different.

If a seller correctly and adequately describes his item, then there shouldn't be many questions if any.

I've sold many guns on a local gun trading forum. The first to PM is the first in line and has first shot. Depending on the question, he's still first in line until I detemine that he's serious or just kicking the tires.

Just because you sell something online means that you can sit back and be lazy while you wait for the "perfect" buyer. Cause there ain't no such thing.

IMHO, there shouldn't be any "I'll Take It" allowed. Everything should be done through a PM. You could simply post "PM sent". Then you can look through your PM's in order and respond in order. It ain't that hard.

Could be worse. Last week I spoke with a guy about meeting to buy a couple 22 rifles. He sent me a text message on Sunday saying he could meet me on Monday night. Called and confirmed on Monday afternoon, set up a meeting place closer to where he lived--which meant driving 45 minutes the opposite way from my house. Tried calling him, just got cell phone, gave him 20 minutes when I got to the location--would even answer his phone and never returned my messages. Had plenty of time to calm down on the hour-and-a-half drive home.

The week before, I posted the first reply that I would like to buy item he had for sale, got beat to it by someone else on another forum I guess, as nobody on the forum had posted, but he PM'd that they were already sold.

Been on the other end on another board (about guns... in California ;))... I posted the first "I'll take it!"

Next post from the seller was "sold to such & such." (A n00b with about 10 posts). Supposedly his PM trumped my public "I'll take it."

Meh... they're running an auction board. So be it.

That's just wrong. If someone states an interest in an item, the next person should say "I'll take it if first offer falls through". Frustrating. Sorry you missed out!

For me it's pretty simple.

No photos, I don't contact the seller.

Only a few posts? I don't contact the seller. Let someone else be the guinea pig. (And, you'll notice, at least I think you will, that most of the problems in the feedback section are with or between posters with only a few posts).

See something I am interested in with photos and the poster has been here for a while? Search the feedback section for his user name-see what others have said.

No feedback? Read his prior posts. All of them generally, and one gets an idea of what kind of guy (or gal) the seller is.

After that, if I feel confident about the deal, contact the seller with an offer or post an "I'll take it!" on the thread.

So far, these little rules for my own behavior have served me well, but YMMV.

Bob
