Hello All,

This is not only my first post here, but it's my first post in any forum about guns. I've never owned a gun myself before, shot a few here and there, but never owned one. I consulted with a good friend who knows a lot about guns and in making my decision, went with the S&W M&P 40.

It worked out best for me over the Glock, or the Sig. I'm learning my weapon, and how to use it properly, and accurately, and I'm really enjoying it.

The gun itself is very nice but I do enjoy customizing things and I am sad to say that I haven't had any luck finding any websites that sell custom accessories like polished slider, different trigger, bored out barrels, etc. Does this even really exist for the gun that I have?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Your friend steered you right, the MP is a great pistol! As Wee Hooker suggested, Burwell can do about anything you want to a MP. I like mine (I have three of them) just the way they are out of the box.
A friend of mine sent his 40 caliber to S & W for custom trigger work and now his trigger is much smoother and lighter.
Oh yeah, welcome to the forum and enjoy your MP!

Hello Alizzo,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new M&P!

You've got a VERY nice weapon there....and it should need absolutely NOTHING from the after-market to give you many long years of reliable service. About the only thing I would suggest is obtaining a set of quality night sights to aid in low-light shooting conditions. Gun fight data suggests that a very significant majority of self-defense shootings occur in low-light conditions and having night sights (or laser grips, for that matter) will give YOU the advantage in a gunfight with a bad guy.

Being new to firearms in general, you should immerse yourself in general firearms safety. This begins with you realizing the fact that YOU are responsible for YOUR weapon. It is your responsibilty to be in control of your gun at ALL times, to insure that you dont hurt/Kill yourself or another by carelessness, negligence or accident. Remember that with owning a gun comes great responsibilty, and you are accountable for every round that leaves the barrel of your M&P.

You should also take the time to reflect on the fact that you are enjoying a right that is denied to other law abiding folks the world over. Men died so you could enjoy that. Real men with families, homes and dreams bled and died so YOU and I could retain the right of self-defense with arms.

I own a full size M&P9 and I have installed Trijicon night sights, had the feed ramp and chamber polished and bought 3 extra mags and a good holster. It is utterly reliable and dead nuts accurate. I trust my life with it.I carry it every day. I practice at least once a month, and I read a LOT about guns....always have. I hope I never have to draw my weapon on another, but if I must, I hope to be quick, proficient, accurate and deadly.

I suggest you read "Armed Response"

Or any articles regarding self defense shooting by Massad Ayoob.

Be Safe (with your weapon)

Be Mindful (of the cost of this sacred right)

Be Respectful (of the power of a gun)

Be Proud (to be a Free man)

Be Deadly (in defense of your life)

Welcome!

The M&P 40 is probably the softest shooting 40 ever. Great gun and a good choice.

As the others have stated there isn't much that you need to do to the gun but Burwell is a good place to start.

Above all, learn how to use it, know your state's current carry laws, and study the use of deadly force.

Also, there are many gun forums out there. This is one of the best. You must have a REAL good BS filter for some of them. Too many armchair ninja commandos giving the wrong advise.

Good luck!

The two most important custom accy for your new pistol are ammo and professional instruction. Spend money on those first.

I agree completely. I shoot my 40c at steel shoots and I out shoot full size guns all the time. As an instructor friend of mine says, "It is the Indian and not the arrow that matters!"

anybody have any suggestions for the best factory .40 rounds to use in these great little guns?

My MP 40 will eat anything, so will my MP 9 Pro and my MP 9c. MP's are not finicky.
As far as accuracy I usually shoot Federal or Winchester White box but I have shot some Monarch (Academy), I can't tell any real distance up to about 20 yards. The only hollow point ammo I have shot through my 40 is Winchester JHP which it shoots fine also.

As Dirtman stated my M&P eats anything. I run bunny fart loads a lot for IDPA and it is as reliable as the full power JHPs. The 135s are almost at 357 mag velocities and the 180s are close to 45acp power factors. I run my full size and compact with Speer Gold Dot 180 short barrel for when it might count. It clocks out at 995 from the full size and 976 from the compact. The standard Speer Gold Dot 180s are 942 & 927.

Wow...

Thank you to everyone who posted replies in here. I haven't had a chance to check and I just saw all of these today. Some great and very helpful responses.

This is a great forum. To all who said that the gun is great just the way it is, I totally agree. I love everything about it. But I have to say, the stuff I saw on Burnwell is pretty cool. It'd be nice to modify the gun a bit to make it custom to myself.

I am definitely all about the safety and learning the correct methods on handling and using my weapon and that always comes first. But a little fun modification wouldn't hurt either.

So thank you to all of you and I'm glad to be a member of this forum.

Don't be too sure.
The number one reason people drop out of my IDPA matches is that they "improve" their guns will ill-advised drop-ins until the gun is no longer reliable.

Thanks!

Just wanted to thank those that responded to my question and apologize for not doing it sooner.......but LIFE called and haven't been on in a while.
