Hi,

I may be able to get a 99% condition 686 no dash with Nill grips for $500.00 How's the price? What year would this gun have been manufactured? Any MIM parts? Thanks

It is a good deal at that price. Without the SN a definite ship date can't be given, but early 1980s is the era. No MIM parts until the -5, in the mid-90s.

Thanks, I'm in the process of getting the serial number from the seller (dealer)and info on a possible recall of that model. Early 80s (81-84) does seem correct.

s&w 686-0

Hello. Great revolver, I have the exact same gun down to the grips. They came with S&w combats which i have. Ideal conceal carry and very accurate.

To check if it has recalled open the cylinder and above the model # there will be a M. which indicates it has been to S&W for the recall.
Enjoy shooting it. By the way i put a 686 + cylinder in it to get the extra round.

Funny how much prices have changed. I purchased the same model in 81 or 82 with the S&W Combat Grips for $328. I would have it to this day if not for the fact a friend had to sell a Colt AR sporter because he was moving to Kalifornia so we traded across the board. A year later I moved to Kalifornia and sold it the AR for $1050.

I had been watching the auction sites and other listings for a while when I bought a 2 1/2 inch no-dash a year or two ago. I paid a lot more than $500 and thought I had gotten a good deal, but I was specific about wanting a no-dash.

Those grips are actually Nill Grips, same as these:

So I'd say you're getting a $400 Model 686 and a set of $100 grips. Go for it!

I had a guy offer me a 686-5 pre lock with facory combat grips for $575 last week. I bought a pre lock 686 Plus 7 shot about a year ago at a LGS for $475 OTD with Box and factory rubber grips. So your about 1/2 way between and deffinately in the ball park. I think they should be selling for a little less IMO but buy what you want and dont second guess yourself. Remember next year they could be much more.

My 581 doesn't have the recall stamp and it might be the best S+Wthat I have ever purchased. I do baby it by shooting mostly .38 Special because that is what I've stocked up on...

Condition is said to be 99% and I can't find any wear from the pics I've seen. Dealer says gun has seen very little usage.

$500 is a great price for this model right now, especially if it checks out well. Here's my track on the 7-shooter version, the Bluebook of Gun Values puts its value $35 above the 6-shooter.

Smith & Wesson 686 Plus Revolver in .357 Magnum, .38 Special, Plus P. 2-1/2 in Bbl. Bluebook of Gun Values (31st Edition) indicates between $375 in 95% condition and $650 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 81 recorded prices for this model gun from $350 to $900 over a period of 6 Yrs 8 Mos ending February 16, 2011. The average price as of that date was $537. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $964.

Here's how the data chart out. Note the trend in price is about $620 and the monthly count trend is increasing. This is a change from when the 2-1/2 incher was hard to find (see before April 2008). Prices were attractive, so evidently, folks who had them decided to ride the wave.

Serial # is AFA51xx. S&W can't research it besides saying its around 83-85. They also said they will no longer perform the modification on these guns. Well at least not free of charge. But he recommended leaving it alone and just using moderate .357 loads. Which I would do anyway with a snubbie.

Interesting. I was told the same thing while other guys have reported they were told to send theirs in and provided a shipping label (there's a thread or two here on the recall topic). Apparently, it's the luck of the draw when it comes to whoever is working Customer Service on any given day. In any case, I didn't pursue it because, like you, mine's a snub and I don't plan on shooting the hot stuff through it.

Forget the email route....I tried that and FINALLY got a reply, which was to tell me the address to send it to, but no mention of S&W covering the shipping charges both ways.

Other posts that I've seen elsewhere indicated that S&W would cover the shipping charges both ways, so I dug deeper. After speaking with a rep at S&W, he directed me to the following link where you can request the warranty work to be done:

So I filled the form out and waited. The next day I received an email that said there was a problem with the serial number that I provided (and I DID type it correctly). So I called S&W the following day and kept hitting ZERO until I got a real person on the phone. He manually generated a return shipping label for me that was emailed to me and then I simply printed it out and attached it to the box I packed the gun in. I called FedEx and they picked it up from my house.

It was picked up last Monday. Yesterday, just 9 days after it was picked up by FedEx to go back for the recall work, I got my gun back. It came back to my house yesterday with the "M" stamped onto the frame to signify that the "magnum" recall had been done.

And maybe it's just my imagination or wishful thinking, but it seems to be a little tighter than it was when I sent it to them. Pretty good service and product support for a gun that was originally purchased (not by me) almost 30 years ago.

Well, I did get an email response from S&W that was different than the rep I spoke to over the phone. Sounds good to me! Why do I get the feeling that someone at S&W follows this forum.
