20 day California Wait for my new 686??

"the right to bear arms shall not be infringed"

The defacto point of all these laws are to make folks accustomed by gradualization that they somehow need "govenment approval" to purchase firearms. Ostensibly, the waiting periods and background checks are just to make sure you're not a bad guy or that you're not on a rant to open fire on a school yard. The fact is that politicians could care less if you off your wife with a gun or go postal with a rifle. They just seize these moments of sorrow to foist more repressive laws on us. Ultimately, the "haves" want the "have nots" staying in "their place" which can't be done to an armed public. It's been my experience that some generalizations can be made along party lines, whether donkey or elephant, but there are very very few politicians that truly can be trusted regardless of party affiliation to protect your gun rights. If your gun rights get beween a politician and some pretty frilly little thing you can kiss any gun rights you have away.

On a closing note. Don't worry about whether it's too late to do anything about it. It's already too late. Total world gun confiscation is inevitable and may not happen in your or your kids lifetime, but it will happen.

There are ways for a CA resident to minimize the gun law problems, etc. Get a Certificate of Eligibility ( COE ) from the DOJ and you don't have a waiting period - buy the gun , pay the bill, and walk. No 10 day wait, for either a handgun or a long gun. Ed.

The Constitution makes you eligible...anything else is a violation of the 2nd amendment.

DOJ list

You are just lucky that gun was on the Calif Dept of Justice Approved Handgun list. For any of you that don't know, the DOJ of Cal requires that any handgun to be sold in Cal pass a destructive test. They require 3 samples and it costs the mfr something like $30,000 to have the guns tested. This is for EVERY model, barrel length, etc. The only Colt Python approved is a 6 inch SS. NOT blue, NOT any other barrel length.
My family settled this state before the gold rush and I will leave as soon as I can convince my wife to relocate. It can't happen soon enough.

That's not the same thing.....a talking orange could have gotten elected if it said I'm not a George Bush Republican, nor did he say he planned on running rough shod over the Constitution and propose a bunch of that kind of stuff prior to the election....and most importantly, we in the South did not elect him. That's a left coast and Northeast thing.

It was as as obvious to most of us as a terd in the punch bowl!

".....and most importantly, we in the South did not elect him. That's a left coast and Northeast thing..."
And we gun owners didn't elect CA "anti-gunners" but in both cases we are stuck with the imcumbents aren't we?

Well, if truth be the objective here, Florida-Virginia AND North Carolina went blue in 2008. It's probably because of the influx of liberals coming from other states, and unfortunately that's not going to stop.

Maybe I'll stay here and wait until they all leave :D

Only applies to C&R long guns with a 03 FFL C&R + COE. Still have to pay DROS fee (Dealer Record of Sale =25$).

Starting 01/01/2012 long guns will be registered same as handguns. Will almost make having a 03FFl and COE pointless.

All these laws were in place long before i could do anything about them (27). We CA guns owners are a minority here and the rest don't care or are anti gun people. People try to fight the laws but changing anything here takes years. I doubt the state will ever use the Federal NCIS system, or be a shall issue state. I think the laws will stay status quo bullet buttons, 10rd mags and the approved handgun list. Maybe even worse if any more large scale gun crimes happen.

I don't want to leave my home state I like it here (besides gun laws). But plenty of people do. Maybe when I am of retirement age I will move.

Florida for quite some time has been republican. We were democrat for most of the 80's and 90's. We had democrat governors and senators through most of the 80's an 90's.

We currently have a bafoon as governor, who is a republican I might add.

You still miss the fact you are a minority there...thankfully gun owners are the majority where I'm at so we're not hopeless here....thank the Lord. It's sad, but I think you are right about much of the country, it's gone. Keep up the good fight though, have a good night.

Try NY you go to the gun shop show them your permit, buy you gun get a receipt bring that to you county center fill out pages of paperwork. Now you wait approx 2 wks If the judge decides you can have another gun they amend your license, back to gun shop more paperwork, only then can you pick-up the gun you paid for wks. earlier. This is for EVERY Handgun you purchase

Yeah, most of the NY counties are like that. Nassau County had a pretty good system (as far as systems go). Once you have your permit, there is no waiting period. You go to police headquarters, pick up a purchase document for $10, and go get the gun. You just have to bring the gun in to headquarters one last time to show them you have the gun and they will add it onto your permit.

And the CA waiting period isn't about background checks. it's a "cooling down" period put in place in the small chance that the person buying the gun isn't buying it to go shoot someone. Of course, if you already own a gun, making you wait for another doesn't make any sense.

Either way, I live in PA now. No permit required to purchase, and no waiting period. Very nice.

Nassau co. seems just a little easier than orange but it's still gun shop, police station ,$10 ,gun shop , police station. lots of steps doesn't Nassau and suffolk have some crazy laws that your permit is only good for the county you live in ?

Nassau county may be easier to get immediate satisfaction but they don't issue non-restricted licenses, or at least, not very many.
I live in Putnam, there's no such thing as restrictions here, and you can buy 1 or 10 guns at a time. Paperwork is 3-4 days.
Can't get from Nassau to the rest of the state without going thru NYC. I can drive from here to the Canadian border with no issues.
In addition, Nassau has a 5 year license renewal, ours are lifetime.
Amendments are $3 here.

The whole "cool down period" is absurd for existing gun owners. Where is the logic in "cool down" if you own a gun already. You are so "hot" you want to shoot someone, but you dont want to use one of your possibly dozens of existing guns, you want to go out and buy that dingy new hi-point 9mm to do the deed? Ridiculous.

No argument here.

The point you're making proves the intent of the law. It's not there for anyone to cool down, it's there to impede your constitutional right to bear arms.

California was once one the most conservative states in the country until the ultra-left liberals from all of the other states moved in ! :( :(
Now they and the illegals outvote us! We now also get the weekly S&W Forum "Let's all piss on California" thread! Why don't you guys just take back all of the liberals you sent us and it would solve our restrictive gun-law problem !

Jerry

Please remember that Reagan and Nixon were Californians !

In Florida, we get our share of ultra-left from New York and New Jersey, but we also get a fair share of ultra-right from places like Ohio, Pennsylvania and other midwest rustbelt places no one wants to retire in.

Good weather and no state income tax makes this a great place to retire, and drive crappy.

That's why I got out as soon as I could. The Minuses currently outweigh the pluses, it was once a wonderful place to live.

I had a military assignment at NAS Pt Mugu (north of Malibu) 82-85. Was a good tour, fine weather, later the wackos took over the legislature. Don
