Does anyone any of these, 22/32 I-Frame target, the Model 35 kit gun, or the Colt Police Positive 22 Target to compare the sizes? Oh and bonus if you have a size comparison with the modern J-frame 317

I tried looking online but I can't see any side-by-side comparison of these models. I like the thinness of the I-Frame and i'm looking for a 22 now in that size.

I have a 22/32 HFT, a model 34 kit gun, and a 317 I guess I could compare. Not for a couple days though. But all the barrel lengths are different. What are you looking at as far as use?

An I frame .22/32 Target will be slightly smaller and lighter than a model 35, which has a heavier wide rib barrel. The latter is the model number given to the .22/32 Target in 1957 and is different than the 4" Kit Gun/model 34.

The I frames: .22/32 Target/Model 35 and Kit Gun/Model 34 are the same size.

The J frames .22/32 Model 35-1, Model 34-1 and Model 317 are the same size. With a 1/8” longer cylinder, cylinder window and therefore also the frame than the above I frames.

There’s no Colts as small as any of the above S&Ws.

Observed measurements

I have both company's .22lr offerings from 1912 to 1936. Colt enlarged the frame of the Police Positive around 1926. S&W did not change the I Frame until after WWII. The Police Positive .22 from 1912 feels awkward to me compared with the .22/.32 HFT. The Police Positive from 1929 feels slightly bigger and fits well, which the measurements show. The Colt's were not equipped with target sights equal to the S&W for my eyes. Both would install about any sight available and my 1916 HFT has an ivory bead that I like. Although the K frame .22's should be a better fit for me I frequently shoot the I frame HFT as well as or better than any revolver.

The following measurements are in this order: cyl dia., cyl length,
weight.

S&W HFT, 1916 - 1.265", 1.266, 22 oz

S&W Kit Gun, 1936 - 1.267, 1.265, 21 oz. with target stocks

Colt PP 1912 - 1.236, 1.258, 22oz

Colt PP 1929 - 1.403, 1.290, 26 oz.

I believe until 1926 models from both company's .22 models are nearly the same. My Colt, 1912 does not have easily adjustable sights. The front sight insert has to be completely removed and replaced to change elevation. The rear sight must be drifted with a hammer to adjust windage. Colt upgraded sights later on the PP frames.

My target sight research on Colt's revolvers from the early 1900's is lacking clarity. It appears they installed decent period target sights on the Officers Model from its start in 1904.

The Police Positive .22lr target sights appear to have been upgraded in 1913 to be more user friendly. Perhaps the competition from S&W urged them to do so.

Here's me 35 no dash. This post needed a 35 picture! ;)
