.22 Standard velocity ammo and bullet wax

I've just finished tearing down and cleaning the wax out of the inside front surface of my MKII and 22/45 magazines...again. Now they will once again function with my lot of CCI sv ammo for a few more cycles before they will begin misfeeding again as the wax builds up on the front wall of the mag.

Both these guns will run all day long on the Federal bulk pack stuff but I can't use it in league.

I need to run "standard velocity" ammo to participate in my clubs bullseye league, but this cycle of frequent wax removal with the CCI is getting very old and I'm wondering what other options are available for sv ammo?

Does all sv ammo have the wax coated bullets?

Is all sv ammo 40 grain?

Wayne; The Standard Velocity ammo is generally designed to the same "Standards" as the Match or Target ammo is since it is usually used as 'Practice' ammo by Match/Target shooters. I don't know of any Target ammo for the .22LR that isn't 40 grains. Most of the Bulk pack ammo is High Velocity with some of it being 40 grain bullets but many of them use lighter bullets. The High Velocity ammo is usually all coated with a copper 'wash' that acts as the "lubrication" for the ammo while the wax serves that same purpose in the Target or Standard Velocity stuff.

I have the same problem with my Ruger magazines and the feed ramp on my Ruger also gets coated with this wax. It's my guess that the wax builds up on the ramp and falls back into the magazines. My Smith & Wesson Model 41s don't have this problem, or at least, I've never had the problem in the last 40 years of shooting the Model 41.

This is a very common problem with the Ruger.

My MK11 cycles very poorly on sv ammo.
My 22/45 will almost not cycle at all on SV ammo.
probblem is not enough power to open the action all the way to latch the action.

I don’t have a problem in my M41 or tricked out 10/22s w/CCI Std Vel. Laupa Master (heavy wax) works in the 10/22s but not the M41. I have not seen a problem w/wax in the mags though its the feed ramp on the M41.
In fact Ten-X builds up in the barrel ramps of the M41.
I seem to remember that Eley makes some 36 gr, possibly Lapua as well, it isn’t cheap.

I've had that problem w/ my S&W 41 mags getting the buildup to the point of misfeeds; I get lumps of the stuff adhering about 3/16" below the front edge of the mag. I clean them every other week, I don't see any waxy residue on the ramp or chamber area, just burned powder.

One of my teammates who shoots a Ruger gave up on CCI because of this. Upon examination, the Ruger mags don't seem to have as much front to back clearance as the S&W's do, so she saw the build up faster than those of us w/ the S&Ws.

Have you tried Federal Gold Medal?

I get 98% reliable operation with it, you should get 100% in the Ruger. It seems to be a lot cleaner.

They (Federal) also have the AutoMatch in a bulk pack of 325, I'm not sure that is SV though.

No I have not tried the Gold Medal. I'll have to see if I can scare some up.

The only other ammo I have on hand that I "think" is standard velocity is 400 rounds of something called RWS Dynamit Nobel 40gr made in Germany. These also have the wax coated bullet but the bullet profile is more blunt than the CCI and the overall cartridge length seems a little shorter than the CCI. As a result these don't seem to deposit as much wax on the front wall of the magazines. I got these from the same guy who I purchased the 1000 rounds of CCI. He threw them in with the deal and said the RWS was kind of spendy stuff.

You might try the Eley-primed Aguila standard velocity, which comes in several grades. The CMP sells two of them; I use the regular yellow/blue box stuff. My Rugers are fairly happy with it, but sometimes get a FTB on the Mk. II because the "collar" on the bullet seems to be a tad larger OD than some other ammo.

I find a toothpick does a nice job of removing the wax buildup on the Rugers.
