I am looking to purchase another S&W .22 cal revolver. Currently own a 617 but would like to get a Mod. 34 or Mod. 43. I would like input from forum members on four inch barrel suggestions. Thanks, in advance for the input.

Have you held a j frame in cocked position?
Sure, they're neat little guns but you can't beat a K frame for it's action, the way it fits your hand,or available grips.Another vote for the Model 18.

I love my 17-3, but I think that the 18 is the best all around choice.

You didn't mention whether your 617 is a four or six-incher. I've got both and I love them dearly. IMHO, the 4 inch 617 is the best all round rimfire revolver made.

It would be hard to beat a model 18.I have a 18-3 that I bought new when they came out. They are outstanding.

stevieboy; My 617 has a six inch barrel. My purpose in buying it was to punch paper targets with it. The single action on it is great but the double action leaves a lot to be desired. It is a heavy gun but accurate if the shooter is good.

The model 34 is alot of fun for a 4" J frame!
The model 43 is somewhat difficult to find and it may cost alot more than a 34,
The 18 is pretty easy to find.
Model 18 617 = K frame
34 and 43 = J frame
All depends which size you prefer.
I like my 4" 34 and the 2" 63 I have, Great plinkers and great easy carry. But I shoot my K22 the most often and accurately!

I guess my question is what is the difference other then available barrel lengths between the Model 17 and the Model 18? I have a pre model 17 with 6 inch barrel and just wanted to know.

In all reality, Very little.

I have a Model 34 which I just aquired. Most accurate .22 I have ever shot!

I picked up a 17-something. 6" barrel , 10 shot , aluminum cylinder. So far very accurate and nice gun. Was wondering how the aluminum cylinders are holding up for everybody? Both my s&W 22's are alum cyl. 317 & 17-8 I think .rj
