2206 won't extact

I just bought a 2206. It was dirty, but otherwise looked ok mechanically.
Went shooting today, and got failures to extract at least 7 per magazine.
I closely inspected the extractor, the hook seems to be in good shape, it is clean under the hook, and seems to have plenty of spring tension.
I almost called the seller and complained that the gun was missing an extractor, because it looks like it is equipped for two, but the exploded diagram in Numrich arms shows only one.
I'm no gunsmith, but I've fixed a lot of guns, and this does not make a lot of sense to me.
What am I missing? I was using Federal bulk ammo, could it be THAT ammunition sensitive? Should I order a new extractor and spring? What do you think? I love the gun except for this!

Just a guess, but if you've disassembled and cleaned everything, the next suspect part on my list would be the recoil spring.

Why is that? Could the slide be moving back too quickly?

Yes sir. A weak spring can have a negative affect on proper extraction. I would eliminate that as a possible cause before looking elsewhere.

Oh, and one more silly question. Why does it look like there is a slot for another extractor on the other side of the slide?

Must be for the left hand drive european models !
