Hey Guys and Ladies, I have been playing with my AR and when to load some rounds for it. Has the power changed from 20 back? My friend and I used 24.5 grs of 748 with the 69gr bullet. That was about mid scale in my old Sierra load manual. Now for the Question, does anyone use 748 and what loads do you use? Plus I would like to load some 62gr to - but I don't have anything for it.

I'm using 25.8gr with a 55gr FMJ bullet.

Looking at a 2001 Winchester Components Catalog, they show 25.5gr of 748 as the MAX charge for a 62gr FMJ. I suggest starting at 10% less and working your loads up from there.

I don't use W748 for the .223 but it is a good powder for that caliber. I have 2 shooting buddies who use nothing but W748 for the .223 and their ammo is good and accurate.

I used to shoot 748 for my AR's but switched to H-335 cause i shoot
a lighter bullet for coyotes and P-dogs. Sorry i can't be of any help.

Using 23.0 gr of Reloader 10X behind a 55gr. bullet.

Excellent performance out of my AR.

I have 6 lbs of 748 and several K of Hornady 55 grainers with FMJs. I need to work up a load for them.

Your load of 24.5 grains of 748 and a 69 grn bullet is a standard match load for many high power shooters. For many, that is the standard that we measured things by....as in if your rifle won't shoot well with that recipe your rifle isn't going to shoot well at all.

Randy

PS. some of us substituted 4895 or AA #2460/H335/BLC2 into that equation and did well with it.

I'm experimenting with 748 in my AR. Seems that my gun liked 25 grns very well. The groups opened up a bit until I got to 25.9 grains where they shrunk again. This was with a Sierra 65 grn Game King I'm hunting with this, so I loaded up a bunch at 25.9/26 grains and plan on shooting for groups now to see if it is what I want. I was getting just under 2800 fps out of my 16" AR 1:9 twist.

Have been using 26 grains behind most any bullet and it just is a magic number. Have used them for 55 fmjs, 63 grain Sierra SMP, 64 grain Winchester PowerPoint and 69 grain Sierra Match...only bullet I have not tried it with is the 75 grain Hornady HP....

Using the 63 grain Sierra in a 700V groups run in the .25 range... .4 in rechambered Remington 600/.222 to .223.

I have shot quite a pile of W-748 underneath 55 grain FMJ and SP bullets from quite a few bullet makers. 26.2 grains W-748, FC or W-W cases, usually CCI, Federal or Winchester small rifle primers. It measures so well, shoots so cleanly and groups better than I can hold. Mostly fired through my older Colt SP-1 or Remington Model 7, although quite a few went through a couple of M-16's that belonged to 'organizations.'

I have never used any crimp, either. My SP-1 never pushes bullets back into the case, and crimping seems to be another variable best avoided until a benefit to crimping is seen.

I will confess to having never experimented with handloading any bullets heavier than 55 grains, although I have shot quite a few cartridges factory-loaded with 62 grainers.

Sir, one caution about 748 is that it's temperature sensitive: Pressures tend to spike unpredictably as the temperature goes up. Most high power guys today avoid it for this reason. Was it me, I'd look into Varget or Re-15 instead.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Do you know how well Varget & RE-15 meter in a Dillon Powder Measure?

I will be loading for a Colt 6933 with a 11.5" barrel and a Colt M16 with an A4 upper and a 20" Govt. barrel.

Besides the several K of Hornady 55 grainers I have I also have 1.5K of .22 69 grain Sierra MatchKing Bullets that I will need to load.

I am also looking at a quick measure powder measure and their Dillon conversion kit, Quick Measure - The Accurate Powder Measure. this would allow me to reload long grain powders in my Dillon 650s.
