Hello, I have a new, not used yet S&W 22A.
I have cci mini mags high velocity 22lr.
I also have cci mini mag standard velocity......can I use the latter or should I be using high velocity rim fire???
Thanks in advance,
So.Cal.Fan, new user.

It is my BELIEF that your gun should function with standard velocity ammo but I've only ever shot CCI MiniMags or Federal's equivalent in mine, so I cannot say for sure.

Thanks, Ed. I guess I can try a few rounds and see if it works, but think I'll break it in with the high velocity mini mags.

I would suggest just using the standard ammo in that gun. You really don't need high power for it to work well at all. They will work fine with just SV in them.

Mine has been fine with standard ammo. It's good with any of the bulk .22 except for Winchester Wild Cat that had some failures in my S&W 22a-1 and also in a Buckmark...so it was the ammo and not the gun in that case. The regular bulk WWB performed just fine.

How about Remington golden bullets...bulk.....brick....any good?
My plumber told me ammo was getting easier to get.....even rim fire....he wanted to buy my S&W 22A because he doesn't have one, and it's more expensive here in California......to buy ammo....or even get ammo in most cases.
I've managed to stock a modest supply of mini mags....after paying too high a price for them, in most cases. Hope it gets easier for us all. It's fun to shoot at the range and should not be so costly.:)

I have never shot Rem through mine because they are so dirty but I think I've shot everything else without any problems.

22A Ammo

I have had my 22A to the range four times. Running through a box of mixed ammo. Has Federal, Rem Thunderbolt, CCI Ect. All runs through fine. Now and then I find a dud. Smooth and polish up the feed ramp. Use a light weight gun oil. Should gobble up most everything you feed it.

My 22A-1 has functioned fine with hundreds of rounds of various manufacturers HV and SV ammo.
I do not use Remington Thunderbolts but the Golden Bullets run fine.
You can rest easy and feed that 22A-1 just about any ammo without worry.

I try to buy the Remington Golden Bullets and Federal Value Pack. Both are 36 gr hollow points with copper plated bullets. They spec at around 1270 fps. They function perfectly in my 22A. These are basically high velocity, similar to the CCI Mini Mags, but they are not the expensive super velocity in the 1400 to 1600 fps range. I can not see a reason to run the expensive super velocity rounds in the 22A. The lower velocity rounds should function fine in the 22A. I use the Rem and Federal 22 LR because when purchased in the bulk boxes, they run 4-5 cents per round and work well in all my 22 handguns and rifles.

On a semi-related topic, I was looking at a magazine loader for rimfire pistols and the list of magazines it functions with includes the S&W 22A but with the caveat "prior to 2011." What's the difference in those magazines and later ones?

Ed

They seem to be very individual guns. My 22S functions best with high velocity ammo and does not do well with anything from Federal. CCI mini-mags are my favorites in it. It will behead gnats at 40 paces with match ammo, but *I* can't. One of my brat kids with 20/12 vision, same as I had at his age, can hit pennies off-hand at 20 meters.

I was never happy with golden bullets. Never tried them in 22A. Mine has 1 kind of ammo it does not like. But I can't remember which. Bob

Remington Golden bullets for 22A

I tried my new22A the other day at the range...works great.
I used CCI mini mag LR22 High Velocity.
I am going to try some CCI standard velocity and also Remington Golden Bullets.
Some of you guys have had luck with both.
I wish something besides CCI mini high velocity would work in my Sig Mosquito...but it probably won't.
Shot several magazines with the Mosquito....surprisingly, never had a problem.
S&W 22A works fabulous. Love it.

I would not shoot very many High powered rounds thru that gun if I were you. You are risking damage by doing that to the gun. You may not hurt it of course but why take chances. I would save the high powered ammo for your rifles or other makes of pistols maybe.

Barrie, I only shot 10 hv mini mags in the S&W.
I will use standard velocity mini mags next time I shoot.
Now the Golden Bullet Remingtons are high velocity I think.
I may try them in the Mosquito...but.....maybe not...that is one picky little pistol.

22 LR rimfire availabilty of late?

We've all read the huge increase in gun sales in the past month...Wonder if we'll have an even worse shortage of rimfire ammo?

Good question. I was on MidwayUSA's wait list for CCI MiniMags last summer and received an email that they were in stock for a dollar less per box of 100 than before the shortage! They're out of stock again but so much for the conspiracy theory that manufacturers were not shipping products in order to create a higher demand that would make higher process palatable.

Ed

Barrie, I have never had a 22a pistol, it must be a frail little thing. I shoot HV through all of my .22 pistols, yesterday my M&P Compact ate over 300 of them without a hicup. Lately I have been shooting ammo purchased thirty + years ago of all brands and velocities, my many .22's have complained not at all. So again what's with the 22A?
