I'm looking for a .22 revolver for my next purchase. I really want a snubby so that I can put it in my 642's pocket holster. I like the 34-1, but would prefer stainless. Does one exist? The 63 is just too big to slide in a pocket. I searched but didn't find anything.

The lightest .22 lr revolver made by Smith is the 317, which is an aluminum framed version of the 63. However, frame dimensions of the 63 and 317 are the same, they're both J-frame guns. I don't know if any manufacturer makes a gun with a smaller frame than that -- perhaps Taurus? You might check that out, I suppose.

Welcome to the forum.

They did make the 63 with a 2" barrel, but they're not that easy to find. The 317 makes a great pocket gun and it fits in a Kramer pocket holster that's molded for a 5 shot.

Hi,

For some reason trying to find a small 22LR revolver in steel these days is a challenge. Ruger discontinued their SP101 in 22lr a few years back, S&W only makes the 317 which is all aluminum including the cylinder. I do think Taurus makes an all steel one if you want to take a risk on the Taurus brand [I'm not...].

Good luck,

Alan

Thanks for the replies & suggestions.

I have no interest in owning a Taurus either (even though I know people who love theirs). I have not personally seen a 317 or a 63 with the 2", but those are possibilities.

I was just thinking about a 34 with Melonite coating for corrosion resistance. However, with the price of a 34-1 and $200 for the Melonite, that becomes a fairly expensive plinker/trainer.

Maybe the market will be up tomorrow....

2" model 63's do exist. A friend happened upon this one while traveling. I bought it sight unseen for $225 including shipping. Its a gem. Yes, it's dirty. It lives in my range bag and is enjoyed often.

Somewhere right now there is someone that has just what you're looking for, doesn't shoot it, and would rather have the money. Put the word out and see what comes back.

wheelgun-realgun, is that a 63 no-dash in the photo? I see no MIM on that gun. I like it....a lot.

BTW, my guns get dirty too & I like them that way, because that means I've enjoyed them for what they were meant to do.

I'm going to do some looking around for one like yours.

It's a 63-3. I'm sorry, I don't know what MIM means. If you can find one of these it will be worth the wait. Good luck!

No, don't do it!!! I have two brand new Taurus revolvers that are at Taurus for the FIFTH time trying to get a trigger issue resolved. I will never own another one and I will sell these two as soon as they're good enough that I feel comfortable selling them.

I can't think of anything you will find that is smaller than the 63 with the 2" barrel. Certainly there are a few S&Ws the same size that are lighter but I don't care for the scadium or whatever else they make them out of.

I bought a 2" Model 63 when thewy first came out. Since then I've managed to find them for 2 of the brothers and Cousin Wayne. All agree that they would be very very near the bottom of the lists of guns to get rid of if a guy ever had to.

I own a lot of S&Ws. I pack nearly daily out on the ranch. Even if I don't carry a gun belt I can simply drop a 2" Model 63 in my vest or jacket pocket. Is it the best CCW gun? No but it'll work. It is also a great plinker. I've killed a lot of grouse and cotton tails with mine.

They have gotten a bit spendy but if you must have the finish and a 34 won't work, it would still be cheaper than buying a 34 and then paying to have it refinish.

There is also the reality that the custom finish is not something you will ever recover the cost of. On the other hand the Model 63 with the 2" is probably going to be worth ever more over time.

My two cents worth.
