27-2 joins the family

After a lot of looking I think I finally found a big brother to sit by my 66 in my pistol rack and go to the range together. I'd love to know about it from the collectors. #N395162. I think this will make a very nice range gun. It's got a little holster wear down by the muzzle but no pitting under the grips. To my untrained eye it looks exceptional. No endshake that I can tell and probably less than .004 slop in single action lockup. I should probably check the gap but it looks good eyballing it. It doesn't look like someone slammed the cylinder a lot the cylinder and hand and stop look nice and sharp ededged. No box of course.

I'm sure you will fall in love with it when you get to the range with it. I know that I thoroughly enjoy shooting my 27's. And I am presently looking for a 6" model myself to finish off my 27 collection. I already have all the common barrel lengths except the 6" model. Hopefully I will be rectifying that in a couple of days.

If it's half as enjoyable as my 4" 66 I'm getting twice as much as I deserve. It looks like a 6" calipers measure it at roughly 5.8". I like my gp100 but boy that 27 sure is pretty. The finish on the blued Smiths is just a work of art. I don't think the trigger has been monkeyed with either I'm grateful for that. They had a python in the case next to the 27. My goodness they want a lot for those now.

N395162 probably dates the gun to 1978. I'm quite aware that the Standard Catalog puts that range in 1975, but I have good reason to believe that is incorrect. Remember that the N prefix numbers were assigned in blocks to various models. They simply don't run sequentially as many presume and as the SCSW implies (although see the footnote regarding serial ranges for the HP on page 488 in the 4th Edition).

This one is much too late to have a 6 1/2" barrel (unless it was a special order). The 6 1/2" barrel on the Model 27-2 was dropped in 1967 in favor of the 6" barrel. At that time, the S prefix was still in use and had not yet been replaced by the N prefix.

Click on the following link to a recent post of a .357 Magnum from 1953 that has the 6 1/2" barrel. If you look closely at the distance between the front of the extractor rod shroud and the rear of the front sight ramp, you will see it is greater than the same gap on the one pictured here. That's a good thing to look for when trying to decide if a particular gun has one or the other barrel length.

Yeah, the distance between the 2 is slight, but noticeable. Thanks. I don't know about the 70's or 80's but S&W has come out with 6 1/2" barreled 27's since the 60's. I happen to have one, which is a 27-5 and dates from late 1990 for a shipping date. They made a run of 500 then for the 12 Revolvers collection (the Outnumbered revolver) and some were marked with the graphics and such like mine is and some were sold without the graphics laser etched on it. I got mine a few years ago off GB for a heck of a deal and ANIB with box and the unused tools still in the plastic. It also happens to have a recessed cylinder too, which is a nice throwback to the older guns. It is a great shooter with a sweet trigger!

Yes. I should have been more clear in my previous post. In the 1990s and beyond (dash 5 and up) there were some more 6 1/2" variants made. But on the earlier dash numbers, the 1/2" longer barrel was discontinued in 1967 and not made again until the last decade of the century. Since I pay almost no attention to anything made after 1982, those later throwbacks don't even enter my consciousness.

My 6 1/2" is a -1. It is a four screw from the early 60's. She locks up like a vault. As stated earlier, any 27 is a fine gun.

You think that's bad? I just bought myself a 6" barrel 27-2 in nickel and its being shipped to my FFL, but I will be having to go back to the rig for my regular 2 week hitch early Wednesday morning, so I won't be in when my FFL guy receives it. So I will be away at work for 2 weeks with it sitting there waiting for me to get back from the rig.
