I looked at a 27-2 today that was in excellent condition. Here are the details. Ser.# S254XXX(I only remember the first three numbers), 5" barrel, blue finish. Asking price is $700. Can anyone give me an approximate manufacture date?

Assuming it has the correct diamond number matching grips, I wholeheartedly agree with the previous opinions that $700 is a good price for a 5", S-prefix, 27-2 in excellent condition.

With all respect to Mr. Iggy, I think $700.00 is better than a "pretty good price."
O/P, if ya can grab it, then post pictures.

I like .357 in classical N frame. I had a 8 & 3/8" before this one. It was iron sight accurate to 75 yards within 4" per group of 5-6 shots. This one has a too high front patridge blade sight that needs to be filed lower and I haven't gotten around to doing that. I hate altering guns and sending them back to the factory. You never know what comes back at you when you say the porterhouse steak is too rare....cooks do things back there if you insult them.

I'll be going back on Tuesday to look it over real close. I have a pre 27 with a 6" barrel and I think they would make a nice pair. I'll be sure to post some pics, and thanks for the help and comments.

If that gun was for sale in SoCal within 100 miles of me - I'ld be all over it for $!000!

I doubt it will still be there Tuesday . That's a $ 1,600 - $ 1,800 gun as described (possibly more). It would have to be a pretty rough ,shooter grade 27-2 ,S prefix five incher, to only be worth $ 700.
Unless you live in a very small town, or a town full of idiots, There is no logical reason why it would sit in a dealers case for more than half a day .

Don't file it down. Just send the complete rear sight assembly back to Smith and they'll replace the rear sight slide with a lower one. A simple fix.

Great suggestions! I concur, don't alter the front sight. But, I think the rear sight should be replaced with a taller one if the front sight is too tall, not a lower one. Other options- change your grip or change your load. A heavier bullet at a lower velocity may bring the POI up.

Chip, I kinda figured you might have a 5" just waiting to show off. Happy New Year. Sadly I made the mistake of parting with 5" M-27 several years ago.

Back atcha, Yeah, I bought that one and a 3 1/2" the same day.:o
Since then I've added two more 3 1/2"s Trouble is I ain't got but two hands.

I sure hope that one the OP is lookin' at is still there.
Those 5 inch guns just feel right in your hand. You would get a lot of good shootin' out of that one.

Iggy it jist dawned one me. I have a couple of hands to help you out with the extra ones. ;)

I stopped today to look closer at this one and it is really a nice condition Smith. Just a faint drag line. Owner was not there but will be tomorrow. Lock up is tight. I was wrong on the serial though, it is S2972xx. 1967-68. If I can buy it I'll be sure to post some pics. For you to enjoy. What kind of grips should this have? It has the same ones as the other ones on this thread.
