First Range Trip with New Bodyguard 2.0

Today I went to the MagGuts website under the Contact Us page. There is the option of suggesting a product, so I suggested a MagGuts extension mag for the Bodyguard 2.0 "12 round" magazine. I mentioned that the OEM BG2.0 "12 round" mag has a problem with nesting of the magazine spring, thus limiting the number of rounds which can be manually loaded. I suggested that the MagGuts flat spring design would add capacity to the BG2.0 mag both by eliminating the troublesome existing OEM mag spring but also by adding MagGuts technology which could increase the capacity beyond what was originally advertised for the BG2.0.

Let's hope they are listening.

And today I got an answer from MagGuts:

I've been on their "notification list" for about 9 months.

Yesterday, I put 200 rounds through my BG 2.0 bringing the total to about 1200 rounds.

Flawless operation. XS R3D sights. Gun still shoots to the left. It's not just me. I had two friends fire it as well. Maybe I'm expecting too much but every other gun I have, including a Shield, is spot on.

How many minutes or hours does it take to shoot 200 rounds?
Have you adjusted the XS sights to POA/POI?

All in all, about an hour. I took my time, studied point of aim, attempted to compensate (which works), etc. The sights appear to be dead on and were set by an S&W armorer who is also a licensed gunsmith.

Go figure.

It may not recoil the same in his hands as yours. A friend's BG2.0 was dead on (POI/POA) as he bought it....but he's left handed!
Don't be afraid to adjust the sights for you.

Moon, I've tinkered with the BG 2.0 I almost don't have the energy or desire to do one more thing. I may get to it, but it's really not a priority since I have my 2 P365s (9mm & .380) and my HK CC9. Thanks for the suggestion.

It may not recoil the same in his hands as yours. A friend's BG2.0 was dead on (POI/POA) as he bought it....but he's left handed!
Don't be afraid to adjust the sights for you.

After the long road you've traveled, a sight adjustment is pretty small potatoes! I'm actually pretty happy with my current combination of BG1.0 rear sight, OEM (now filled with white paint) front.
The early P365s had the same problem; SIG went cheapjack on the night sight, and they were dim. Current production is much better.

200 flawless rds. so far.
Took the plunge and bought a set of 380 dies.

You won't regret it. I use either PRN or FMJ, usually from Everglades(always free shipping), sometimes from Berrys, and Bullseye....which is apparently out of production.
You'll save enough money, especially compared to how cheap 9s are, to be worth loading .380s.

Im a lefty…just picked one up. Shot left for sure. Drifted the sights and it helped some. No issues with several types of fmj and hollow points. Fun little gun. Could not fit 12 rounds in fresh mag initially, but now it is fine. Picked up another 12 rounder and same thing. My only real complaint so far is the huge notch in rear sight…makes it tough for real precise shots, so an aftermarket is probably in my future. Overall i call the gun a win.

After 10 months I still cannot get 12 in the 12-round mag or 10 in the 10-round mag.

I'm waiting for MagGuts to release their +2 kit.

I found you have to use a good mag loader and just keep pushing & releasing and it will work.

A big stinkin' hammer will scarcely get the advertised into these magazines, let alone leave enough room to lock them in against a closed slide. There is a tolerance issue in these magazines, either in the spring or the follower, that Smith has chosen not to notice. Even newer mags display this issue. Oddly, a couple of mine hold 10, and lock in with room to spare. Weird.

I agree. Since August of 2024, I still cannot get a full mag (10 or 12) loaded with my UpLULA.

How difficult is it for a firearm manufacturer, like Smith & Wesson or Sig Sauer, to design, test, and manufacturer an extremely simple device like a semi-auto magazine???

I'm still waiting for MagGuts to release a +2 kit!

It's probably one reason mfgs job out magazines to Okay, MecGar or one of the others. Maybe that's where the problem comes in, communicating the issue to the jobber. As mentioned, a few of my mags will hold the advertised, with enough room to lock into the gun against a closed slide. Others simply won't lock in, and I refuse to get too medieval inserting it.
The good news, the mags all run just fine, but sometimes the backup mag only has 9 rounds, and never top off the one in the gun.

After shooting a couple 100 rds. with it and leaving it loaded for about a month, I can finally get 12 into my 12 rd. mag without using an Uplula. However, INSERTING that fully loaded 12 rd. mag with the slide forward is a different story. For now, I am cheerfully loading my 12 rd. mag with 12 and inserting it with the slide locked open.

Since I plan to carry it with the 10 rd. inserted and the 12 as a reload, I'm happy even if the 12 does not loosen up any more than it already has. Btw, I do carry the 10 rd. mag with 9 in it (and 1 in the chamber), but that's simply because based on decades of experience I load all my mags to -1; ARs and AKs to -2. Please note: I am not saying that is necessary. I'm only saying that it is what works best for me.

When did they start making mag capacity claims as a marketing ploy? I've got almost half a century on this planet, fired, been issued, and own several different models of Smith & Wesson pistol, and I have yet to see one that didn't hold the number of rounds in the magazine that it was advertised to hold.

When the 365 came out it was ALL about capacity, so that's when they started to care about capacity for marketing. I remember people making a big deal that the Hellcat, which came out after the 365 and its 10 round flush fit mag, held 11 rounds!

I think it's supposed to be 10 + 1 and 12 + 1.
Tight mags don't bother me because (1) I associate strong springs with reliability and (2) I usually run all my mags minus 1 of max.

The Shield EZ have an easy loader built in the mags. And for the tough ones I have an Uplula. Who wants loose mags?

My thought is that the backup mag may be inserted while the slide is closed; arbitrarily, if you shoot 6 or 7 rounds, get behind something solid, and want a full mag in the gun. Some of my 10 round mags are extremely difficult to lock in against a closed slide, others are not. I'll download the difficult, spare mag by one round, so there is no drama in locking it in. If you've been unlucky enough to get in a gunfight using a pocket pistol, the last thing you need is a hassle with a reload.
I'm not going to get into the need for an extra magazine; just like the gun itself, I'd rather have it, and not need it.

Exactly right. If Smith is claiming their mags hold 10 or 12, and still lock into the gun, then they should. But the BG2.0 is so good, I'll take it as it is. But I am hoping Smith addresses the issue sometime.

Had a bit of a scare other day. Popping off rds at the range and for the first time after hundreds of rds fired it jammed. Thought I was beyond those feeding issues wtf! Then after I got the rd out saw it wasn't a S&B but my BG's arch nemesis
- Fiocchi! (See my earlier post) Seems sometime in the past I mixed in a few into the open S&B box pre BG days and didn't notice when loading the mags which btw load fine. So weird how the gun will not feed Fiocchi fmj.

It's 10 + 1 and 12 + 1. I can get both mags full but it takes a lot of force. Maybe my hands are stronger from loading so many mags over the years lol. But yeah out of the box they are stiff and some can't do it at all any many struggle to do it. They will loosen up over time. I would rather have a good strong spring to be honest.

There are hundreds of posts describing issues with that ammo.
There is a good list of options for every style of bullet you can select for practice and for defense carry that work fine.
Is there something about the Fiochhi brand that I'm missing?

I reload my 380 ammo for my BG 2.0 but I have never seen a semi auto spread the brass in all directions. I shoot only on our indoor range so I can find all my brass after shooting. I can stand in one position and it still goes all over.

I noticed that casings do fly all over when I shoot my BG2.
Could that be caused by striker drag?

Because I already own a bunch of 380 Fiocchi for my lcp2 and have had zero issues with it or in any other caliber. And sop for myself is to run all types of ammo thru any new gun to know its strong and weak points, dependable ammo being part of that. That's why.

Yes, having an existing inventory to use is good reason to try it.
I see Fiocchi is a very high quality brand.
Is there something unusual about it's design/primer/powder or physical dimensions that causes the BG2 to have a problem?
Over the past 40+ years of buying ammo, I've never purchased Fiocchi, and I don't know why.

I don't see a need to do this. It is only a "12 round magazine" because Smith says so. And that is clearly not true. Many have reported that they either could not get 12 rounds in or if they did it affected the function of the pistol. Some even have trouble with 11 rounds. I consider this to be a 10 round magazine. It loads 10 rounds easily and the function of the pistol is not affected.

Smith makes claims for magazine capacity as a marketing ploy. That should not affect how you use your pistol.

My 12 round mag hoods 12, my 10 round mags hold 10.
