I just bought a 27-6 on a local deal. I have been looking for the right deal on a 6" 27 for a while now, this one fell into my lap. I cant seem to find any info on a 27-6, other than a paper the seller gave to me. Does any one know anything about this particular model? Seems weird that a forum search as well as google search brings up next to nothing on the -6 models. Thanks in advance for any information.

You don't see many, in fact yours is only the second one I've seen. Here's my 27-6, it had all the right features: round butt gripframe, checkered top strap, etc, and the newer - fitted - rear sight assembly, very much preferable to the older style.

Neat gun, a M27 with the latest enhancements, nothing wrong.

Here's a pic of the one I had in the collection:

This one is wearing RB to SB Spegel Targets made with Macassar Ebony.

Smithnut, i agree i do like the fitted rear sight on the checkered topstrap.

Does anyone happen to know what grips it would have came with from the factory? I never have been a fan of the rubber hogues that mine wears. Id like to have a set or factory stocks for it but i will probably wind up with wood hogue grips

You bought the last series of the regular production of the Model 27, which came out one year before it was discontinued, in 1994. It was re-issued in 2000 as a Performance Center 8-shot revolver, as a dash-7.

The -6 came with Hogue grips, the frame was drilled and tapped for a scope, the rear sight leaf was changed, and the extractor was changed, I assume from the previous series, the -5.

I get all this from the SCSW, I know little about them otherwise. I tend to prefer the older ones, and have a M27-2, from 1977. Does yours still have the hallmark of the M27, the finely checkered top strap and sight leaf?

It sure does, the checkered top strap and fitted rear sight. I have always loved the look of that feature.

I also have a 27-2, 8-3/8 barrel but i wanted a 6" for a more portable platform.

Ruger, you say the dash 6 are not desirable and the -2 is the last good 27. Are you saying there are issues with the later 27 or just that you prefer the -2 guns? Any reason they are undesirable?

Purist collector mindset. There are reasons for that value set, but they do not seem applicable to your situation from what you say. I generally do not favor it. I'd kind of like a 27-2 5", but don't need one enough to pay the going rate, and I am not a fan of the recessed chambers as they make for more annoying cleaning.

I like the 6" barreled n frames in 357. But there all well balanced in magnum calibers. I prefer barrels from 4", 5", 5.5", 6", 6.5" what ever comes along. I'm not a purist, not a collector, I like holding and shooting them. Thank god we still live in a free country were we can still own them.
I'm not a pistol guy, large frame magnum revolvers tips my fancy.

Nice find, you did ok. Before the plastic gun buying craze hit the magnum revolvers were rare. I never could find used n frames.
Be happy when you find them.

I'd go to eBay and get some Thailand wood grips for it.

Super cool revolver, I think.
I had ever seen one for sale it would have come home with me.

The 27-2 was the last P n R model 27. More hand fitting and a much more precise revolver…..IMHO!

Anyone that dismisses a gun for not being pinned and recessed is missing out on some extremely fine firearms that are easily as accurate as the old models. From a pure aesthetic standpoint the old models are tough to beat but if you have any plans on making it go bang you are not giving up a thing with a more modern selection.

I have to disagree with that being "undesirable" -6s are definitely uncommon and very cool in my opinion. Just because its not pinned and recessed, doesnt mean its not desirable. Great pick up! A set of wood stocks would change the whole look of that gun. Congrats!

I couldn't agree more after reading the S&W letter. Hell, if I ran across one like that I'd take it home too!

You betcha, there are some really nice ones after the P&R models even before the "HH" ones. But wait, I even have a couple of cool "HH" ones myself...like my 686+ 3"...and they're all staying with me.

Nice find! I really like the early to mid-1990's period N (and L) frames and have accumulated a few:

25-9 .45 Colt Target Heavy Barrel 6" (1990)
27-5 .357 Magnum 5" (1991)
29-5 .44 MagnaClassic 7-1/2" full lug (1990)
29-6 .44 Classic 6-1/2" full lug (1994)
625-5 Model of 1989 .45 Colt Stainless 5" full lug (1993)
625-6 Model of 1989 .45 Colt Stainless Mountain Gun 4" (1996)
629-3 .44 Classic Stainless 5" full lug (1992)
629-4 .44 Magnum Stainless Mountain Gun 4" (1995)
629-4 .44 Magnum Stainless 6" round and square butt (1994)
686-4 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless 6" .357 (1996)
686-4 Distinguished Combat Magnum "Plus" 7-Shot 4" .357 (1996)

Most of these won't appeal to collectors but IMNSHO I feel that they are among the best built by S&W in terms of engineering, build quality, and endurance. This is also the tail end of the hammer mounted firing pin, pre-lock era.

Enjoy your 27-6!

Well the range report is in on this one, and desireable or not, she is a shooter!! With my homebrew 158gr lswc, the 10" gong at 100 yards didnt stand a chance after a little sight adjustment. This one seems to shoot every bit as good as my 8-3/8 27-2 from what i can see. And it seems to do just fine with the same load, always a plus!
