All,

I recently acquired a 4" Nickle 27 and the rear sight projects an awful long way forward on the frame. It's well past the point where the frame takes a dip toward down to meet the barrel. Now I've seen this before, but never this pronounced. Can someone tell me how far past the dip the rear sight leaf is supposed to project?

Sorry, I don't have a photo available now.

I've seen them sometimes protrude forward to unattractive excess. Depending upon the screw position (you have to have sufficient length forward of the screw for tension), I don't see why the front end can't be shortened to look better.

I suggest you leave it alone.

Chad -

Absolutely love the pinned ramp. Mine protrudes a good 1/8", maybe a touch farther than yours. I just don't get it. On S&W's flagship revolver, why would they allow the leaf to extend so far forward and look so ackward?

I'm not planning on trimming it anytime soon, but I may. I just added some aged elephant ivory grips, and the gun looks real good.

For your benefit, let me repeat something I said in another post: I have modified a few firearms over the years. It always seemed like a great idea at the time. In every case, I later wished I had left well enough alone. If you have to ask, don't do it.

I agree with this statement absolutely. Do NOT modify. What may look better to you will look "wrong" to people who know and the value of your gun will be damaged as folks will assume that all sorts of improper modifications were made by someone that did not know what they were doing. Please do NOT modify a fine 27 (or any other fine S&W).
