28-2 highway patrolman 4 inch…

I only have one 4 and one 6. Great shooters and they simply look like they mean business!!!

Al

They are extremely intimidating for sure! I have gone nuts buying Model 28s. I bought a 1964 (my birth year) 6" still in the box, and a 1975 4" still in the box. Then, since these two were too nice to carry into the woods, I bought two of the same barrel lengths that weren't so pretty cosmetically. I fully blame everybody on this forum for "enabling" my purchases of these fine revolvers!

I have a 4" and 6", both "S" prefix guns. The 4" was a factory rebuild a number of years ago. The 6" has the smoothest action I've ever felt on a factory revolver.

What does a factory rebuild normally involve? I see that the 4" looks shinier, but what else did the factory do?

I bought my 6" M-28 in 1981 because I had been looking and looking for a 4"
and couldn't find one. Had to settle for a 4" M-27 instead.

This was an old Deputy Sherrif's gun and was well used when I got it many years ago. It had been refinished sometime in its life and the S&W logo on the side plate was almost gone. The action was smooth but the timing and lock up were loose. I sent the gun with an NOS target hammer and trigger back to the factory and asked that they try and restamp the logo, install the hammer and trigger, replace the hand and all springs, and refinish the gun in high polish blue with a red ramp/white outline sight set up. This is how she came back (Minus the grips). The action is slick, timing and lock up are excellent and the finish (as well as the restamped logo) is awesome. As I recall, the total cost of the work, including shipping back to me was $305. I paid $350 for the gun so my total investment of about $750 (Which included the price of the NOS hammer/trigger) was a pretty good investment. The Curt Harlow reworked factory targets are just icing on the cake!

Thank you. That is a good-looking revolver!

How long ago was that rebuild?
I have a bubba gun that will probably become a surgery practice gun and Frankenstein 28-2 with target trigger and hammer but I'm wondering what a full rebuild and refinish would be today? It's already polished so not original finish.
It's be interesting to see what they would do with it.

My 4-in model 28 is a 1962 gun. I really like the
N frames.

I can't find the paperwork, but I'm thinkin it was at least 10 years ago.

I wonder if the S&W factory will still do a refinish/rebuild on a vintage gun?

I guess I'm in the minority. I was never attracted to a 357 in an N Frame. If I'm toting an N then caliber better start with a 4………. That said, I would like to have an HD or OD. Which makes zero sense because it's even less potent than the 357. I guess it's the history that draws me to the 38s

you know, I thought the same thing since I had a Model 19. Then I got a 27, and I really liked shooting it. then an RM, then a 357 Magnum....I love my 44s too, but shooting that 27 is fun.

And the OD is just as fine a piece as an RM, without the reg number.
