28-2 markings (updated with grip frame pictures)

I bought a 4" 28-2 from a local pawnshop and found it with unusual(to me) markings. It also has only 5 digits in the serial #. Bought this along with a 2 1/2 inch nickel 19-5. Any information appreciated as to the markings. I have no idea how old this is. It seems to have it's share of muzzle wear but is clean for a used gun. Unfortunately, the pawnbroker can only release 1 gun per week to an individual so the mod 19-5 has to wait for the homecoming. $775 OTD for both!

I don't think you have determined which set of numbers is the serial number. It isn't "19756", it probably is "N80". Assembly numbers are stamped on several components as the gun is fit to insure they stay together throughout the finish and final assembly. After that, they mean nothing.

I think "N80" is the serial number. N frames were numbered to "S333454" by about 1969-1970, then the numbers went to an "N" series in 1969, beginning with "N1". Your Highway Patrolman may be the 80th N-series made.

The serial number that counts is stamped on the bottom flat portion of the frame. You will need to take the grips off to confirm it.

The only number that counts is the one off the bottom of the grip frame (not the sides). The five digit number is an assembly number.

Can you post a photo of the bottom of the grip frame ?

The SN# is definitely N80 and is properly marked above the Model number in the crane cut-out. I would hazard a guess the bottom of the butt has the N80 and the side of the grip frame has the other numbers which are assembly numbers and mean nothing outside the factory.

The N serial range started at N1. I believe Chuck Odom (29-1) has 29-2 SN# N3.

I had to remove the stocks again and take pictures. The serial number is definitely N80. Thanks to all who responded. Maybe '69-'70 DOB?

I wonder what number the dealer logged as the serial?

I have owned several guns that I know for a fact the seller logged an incorrect number as the serial.

We know that N1 was a 28 and now we know that N80 was also a 28. Did S&W make runs of the same model using consecutive serial numbers?

When I first saw the serial number, I thought the last digits had been 'photo shopped' out. Sweet serial number!!
