I walked into my local pawn shop this afternoon for my weekly visit. Everyone there knows me and we had some good conversations.
One employee knew I liked 10mm,so they pulled out a SA XD 10mm. I politely explained that XDs don't do anything for me, and as they were putting it back, I noticed a 4" Highway Patrolman 2 spots over from it. They pulled it out and handed it to me and I saw the price at $899, thoughI didn't pay it much attention because they always cut me a good deal, and I help them out when I can as well. I started doing my usual checks, not even really looking at the gun, but just doing it by feel as I was talking to the employee. When I cocked the hammer back and felt it fall as I touched it again with my thumb, I froze and stopped talking. I asked the employee if they saw that and they hadn't, so I did it again for their benefit.
At this point they get on the phone with the shop owner and they tell him who it is and what is happening. He asks to talk to me, and after a short visit, he asks what is going on. I explain that the hammer full cock notch is damaged and/or the sear from either abuse or someone tried to do a "trigger job."
He asks me what my offer would be on it, and since it was wearing Pachy Presentations and not the original stocks, I offered $450. He counterd with $550 and said that for less, he would send it to the gunsmith. I told him that his 'smith would charge him $200 for fitting a "new" hammer or trigger, or both, and he could be spending another $100 or more on parts. By this time he would have his asking price tied up in the gun and make nothing. I told him to meet me in the middle at $500 + tax and he could make $150 right now. He hates it that I know the pawn shop " pricing formula."
So I walk out with the 4" 28-2 for a total of $552.50. I have hammers and triggers to drop in it, and a set of Magnas to pop on it. Here it is with a matched hammer and trigger installed and wearing it's Magna stocks. It's an old LE gun with LPD 240 stamped below the cylinder windows on the left side. S/N N5959X puts it in "Dark Winds" story timeline.

Your 28 looks to be in very good condition. I think that you made a great deal considering that you had the needed parts and the ability to make the need repairs.

After reading your post...I learned something...that the factory is still making replacement parts....NEW hammers, triggers and such....just wondering if your drop in parts were "NEW" like you stated it needed....

I doubt that the factory still makes "new" triggers and hammers for vintage Smith revolvers. The OP probably had new old stock parts for the gun. Just a guess!

That’s the way to do it.👍👍 Congratulations on a great looking revolver at a reasonable price. A repair easily made by most on here.
Today’s gun prices are a little crazy, especially for M28s and M10s. I hope the trend slows down.

Nice find and some great negotiation. Could be that when you open it up it'll be gunked up too, LE used to use a lot of WD40 in that timeframe.

Actually, when I removed the Goodyear grips, oil ran out and made a small puddle. No chance at all of any rust forming inside or under the rubber grips. A welcome sight.

The "new" parts were new to the gun, and left over from a target hammer and trigger swap I did on one of my 27s.
