28-2 ?'s and price check

You went with your initial instincts, and they didn't let you down.
Plus the $50 coupon makes it a killer deal. Not a thing wrong with the gold inlay either. Enjoy.

I like HPs that are well worn...when I'm the one that did the wearing.

That's a nice looking belt and holster...no frills and all business. It looks like a (more or less) plain garrison-style belt, and I can't tell from the photos if it is lined or not. The holster looks sort of like a vintage Safariland. Care to give some details? I like it. That whole revolver/belt/holster combination just shouts character...a gun well used and well taken care of.

My local gun shop has a 28-2 on the shelf for $799 in about 90%, maybe a little less. He knows it's too high and would take less, but any S&W revolver is scarce in these parts. Here are my two.

Now I'm curious...

A four inch, four screw Model 28, NRA Modern Gun Condition Standards "excellent"; numbered magnas; box, tools and docs (the box is complete but worn).

Fair market value?

IIRC, the one in my earlier post cost me $230 about 8 years ago. The six inch version does not seem to bring as much as a four inch. Still, I would not let it go for twice that now.

Here is the other side...

I gave 450.00 for a for a 1976-1977 model 28 4 inch blued in December 2013 that had been fired 5 times, looking at the cylinder one hole had never been fired. Gun had no wear ring, and a tad bit of holster wear on end of barrel. No box or papers, just a leather holster and belt and gun.

$550 for that, YOU did very well. The 28-2s are awesome firearms. I picked up my "S" serial numbered 28-2 a while back for $400. As others have said, the days of $350-$400 28s are gone.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

I took an old toothbrush and nail polish remover and the gold paint came right off. Looks much better. Thanks guys..

Great looking gun if you bought it for shooter don't worry about the gold, It is in safe queen condition by the pictures. A lot of the smiths had that gold inlay in the marking's. I've never removed it myself but I heard its no big deal. Just be careful. Enjoy the HP it's one of my favorite range guns. The only one I like better is my 3 1/2 " 27 in 357 that is.

I am so jealous! I found a decent 28-2 and the guns shop refused to move below the sale price of $700. After UT tax it would have been $748....

I still have those bonanza gold inlay kits the bottle of gold dust is worth more today. My m27-2 in blue has the gold inlay that's wearing off. It does look like pump my m27-2 but at the sametime it's bling. I came with the inlay but the bluing is 99%.

My m28's were $695 with 6" barrels and my m27-2's were $795 with 6" barrels all of them are 99.99+or - finish. But nothing under 99%.

Yeah, 799 is waaaay too high

You'd be surprised to see what people are paying for top notch Model 28s these days. As someone else mentioned here or in some other subforum about 28s, the days of $400 Model 28s are long gone.

Sounds a bit high to me.
I got a 6" model 28-2 brand new in the blue box with the screw driver and cleaning rod as well as all the paper work and the oil paper the gun came from the factory in.
I couldn't get the guy to come down on the price.
So I ended up paying the full ------$148.00 for it !!!
Of course this was in 1975.
