28-2 ?'s and price check

Local cabelas has a used 28-2 4" (N prefix)... Has target stocks, pinned/recessed and is in really nice shape, I'd venture to say 95-97%+ and I'm pretty anal! :D The gun does have gold inlay on the stampings which I do not like, but I think this can be removed...

2 questions:
Do the 28-2's have the grips that are stamped with the serial number? When did they stop doing this? I seem to see some that have the stampings in the grips, and others where the stamping is absent...

Is $599 a "good" price on this gun? I'm thinking it is about at the top of market value...?

Sounds like a nice 28, but the price is a little high IMHO. $450 - 500 in the condition you found.
 
I'm with STMRY on this.

You may want to try and deal a bit with them, though. They will discount, and it all depends on how long they've had a particular gun. You may want to offer $500, and see if they move off $599.
 
I'm not seeing too many 28's under $500 any more. Make them an offer and try to get it. You won't find a better shooter than the 28.
 
The 28s are currently on a faster-than-average upswing in value -- it's weird, frankly, but that specific model is starting to command prices that its upscale cousin the 27 used to enjoy exclusively.

Ran me $400. The target grips may or may not have been original, they're not stamped in any case. I wound up selling them for $75 to finance magnas and a t grip combo, the best combo.
 
Usually, the only way to know for sure if target stocks are original to the gun is if the original box they came is is marked
"T" in the stocks section of the end label. I've never seen a set of targets that were numbered to the gun, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. The magnas are the standard stock, I think it looks best with the target stocks, but my favorite stocks for shooting, and the ones that feel the best in my hand, are these:

Don't know where you're located, but the price is dead on for around here, and actually a bit less, especially for a 97% gun.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat at that price.
 
I ended up bringing it home I couldnt resist. :D Its a beauty, dates to 1979... I cant really find any flaws at all with it and it barely has a turn line. I had a $50 off coupon so it cost me $550. Guy at the counter said it came in only a few days ago...

Another question: How can I safely remove the gold inlay from the lettering on this? Thanks guys.

Wow, that is a nice one, congrats.
I took the gold lettering off a M19 with Hoppes #9, a toothbrush, a toothpick and a little time.
 
You did good. I think the price was good. Mine is not as nice as your and at $475 OTD I thought I did well for my area. That was about two years ago. You don't see too many 28-2 for sale in my area.
 
Ken L that's the first time I've seen a set of finger groove stocks on a Mod 28.
The yellow sight insert is unique too.

It's the same 4 inch Mod 28-2 in both pictures. That's what happens when you carry one a million miles!:D

To the OP, if you can get that one bought go for it. The days of $450 Highway Patrolmans are over.

Plus the $50 coupon makes it a killer deal. Not a thing wrong with the gold inlay either. Enjoy.

That's a nice looking belt and holster...no frills and all business. It looks like a (more or less) plain garrison-style belt, and I can't tell from the photos if it is lined or not. The holster looks sort of like a vintage Safariland. Care to give some details? I like it. That whole revolver/belt/holster combination just shouts character...a gun well used and well taken care of.
 
My local gun shop has a 28-2 on the shelf for $799 in about 90%, maybe a little less. He knows it's too high and would take less, but any S&W revolver is scarce in these parts. Here are my two.

Now I'm curious...

A four inch, four screw Model 28, NRA Modern Gun Condition Standards "excellent"; numbered magnas; box, tools and docs (the box is complete but worn).

Fair market value?

IIRC, the one in my earlier post cost me $230 about 8 years ago. The six inch version does not seem to bring as much as a four inch. Still, I would not let it go for twice that now.

I gave 450.00 for a for a 1976-1977 model 28 4 inch blued in December 2013 that had been fired 5 times, looking at the cylinder one hole had never been fired. Gun had no wear ring, and a tad bit of holster wear on end of barrel. No box or papers, just a leather holster and belt and gun.
 
$550 for that, YOU did very well. The 28-2s are awesome firearms. I picked up my "S" serial numbered 28-2 a while back for $400. As others have said, the days of $350-$400 28s are gone.
