With no more information than was given I have to ask, is this your first revolver?

There is a gap between the barrel and cylinder, necessary for function. When fired, combustion gasses and un/partially burned powder will be ejected under high pressure through this gap. The degree to which this is observed varies depending on ammunition/powder being used and lighting conditions. The sparks you see are powder grains still burning. Unless there is something else you didn't mention it sounds perfectly normal for a revolver.

Nope, have a Lew Horton 629 3inch barrel Magna ported, a 640, 340 M&P, 4-inch Highway Patrolman ( one with problem is a 6-inch) and a old 1960s J-frame none of them do it. I had a Rossi years ago did the same thing so I got rid of it, don't want to get rid of this one.

To make sure it's not unique to the load you are using, fire the exact same ammo out of your 4" Highway Patrolman. Just to see if you still get the same sparks and shaving.

It's not uncommon for sparks to come out of the b/c gap.

However, shaving lead is a problem due to mechanical alignment between cylinder hole and
the barrel's forcing cone.

BTW, did you wear #39 for the Miami Dolphins ?

Katy, I did'nt have the other Highway Patrolman, but shot the same ammo in the 640 & 340. Green box Remington 38Spl and American Federal 357. Is ther any list of S&W gunsmiths ( nothing on there website) I'd like to use a certified S&W gunsmith in Jacksonville Fl.

Thanks, LCSONKA

PS. The zonk was my childhood hero and still my al ltime favorite runner.

Check the timing. Check the B/C air gap. How does the forcing cone look? If these issues are corrected or adjusted, the spitting should be greatly reduced so you or other shooters are not in harms way.

+1 On timing check

Thanks, 500 magnum nut and yard dog. I called S&W today said they can't give me any info certified local gunsmiths, but to send it to them thy'd fix it for about $100. We had a guy in Jacksonville, Fl The Gun Doctor when his shop closed I got his home phone #. He was trained at the S&W academy, wish I could find him.

Thanks, LCSONKA
